Considering, however, that he did not take part in any of Ids engagements as a two-year-old, that circumstance would, to a great extent, explain his beiug overlooked. Trained in tho famous King3clere establishment, presided over by John Porter, and owned conjointly by Lord Alington and Sir Frederick Johnston, it will probably be found that Common's victory was fully anticipated by his party. Peter Flower, who finished third, has been favourite during the winter months, and at last advices stood at 11 to 4, so that he would probably start a warm favourite on the day. Common, Orvieto, and Peter Flower, are all engaged in the Derby, to be run at Epsom on the 27 th instant. LIST OF WINNERS.
The Auckland Racing Club's winter programme will claim the attention of horseowners to-day, nominations being due at eight p.m. for the Great Northern Steeplechase of ;!lXJsovs, and the Hurdle Race of lOOsovs.
Nominations for the following events— Handicap Maiden Plate, Handicap Hurdle Race, Birthday Handicap, Handicap Steeplechase, Victoria, Handicap, Pony Handicap, and Welter Handicap, to be run at theTakapuna winter meeting on the 23th —are due to-night.
The nominations for the several events of the meeting which is being promoted by the Auckland Trotting Club on behalf of the sufferers by the mining accident at Huntly are due to-night. The full programme will be found elsewhere in this issue.
Messrs. Buckland and Sons will offer a number of thoroughbreds by auction to-day at the Haymarket, particulars of which will be found in an advertisement appearing in another column.
