PUHIPUHI MINING DISTRICT.

[by telegraph.—OWN CORRESPONDENT.] Whangakki, Tuesday. During the last month twelve new licensed holdings have been taken up, and other claims pegged out. All the people who did nob believe in Puhipuhi are now supposed to be converted, except two, and they are supposed to give in after the prospectors' first crushing. The late furore has pub new life in the field. Several of the claims have started working again after being idle for months. Good progress is being made with the erection of the battery, which is expected to be running by the end of the mouth or thereabouts. There have been no new finds lately, but the prospects of the field have improved nonetheless. I hear of tradesmen going out there to set up. business, and some are anxiously waiting for the township to be laid out. The late tremendous rainfall has softened the airline, causing some of the carters to get bogged, but both of the county councils arc keeping men at work. A belief in the permanence of the silver deposits is steadily gaining ground, and men who have kept aloof from the field all along are beginning to acquire small interests. Whether right or wrong the weight of opinion is against gold being found in quantities, except where ibis associated and mixed with the silver. Old Thames miners expect to get the colour in the creeks, and when they do not get it. they are inclined to be sceptical about much free gold in the reels. . . • \ At this stage it would be premature to offer an opinion, bub another month or two will show who is right.
