THE EXPENSES OF THE LIBERAL CANDIDATES.

TO THE EDITOR. Sir,—ln reference to certain remaks made in the case Brett v. Duncan in the Resident Magistrate's Court yesterday, will you kindly allow me to state that I paid all my own expenses in the recent election, and that I had an election clerk of my own. I never employed Mr. Duncan at all. The election campaign, though I was scarcely three weeks a candidate, cost me £136, including printing and advertising. After the election Mr. Duncan showed me a number of accounts which he stated he had contracted on the joint account of the three candidates, Messrs. Shera, Rces, and myself. These accounts amounted to £4S, and I gave Mr. Duncan a contribution to pay these, which, as he says, was about £20. I made out a balance-sheet of the joint account, which ] gave to Mr. Duncan, and a copy of which ] have. The correctness of this balancesheet has never been disputed. The confusion in the accounts has evidently arisen through Mr. Duncan having acted as Mr. Rees election clerk, paying that gentleman's individual expenses.— am, etc., W. S. Napier.
