It is gratifying to find that the railway revenue for the year ending March 31, is the largest we have had. The Commissioners estimated that the amount received for the year would be £1,080,000, whereas it will amount to £1,113,287. The revenue for 1889-90 was £1,093,340, but it was thought that the same amount would not be realised this year, because last year the receipts were considerably swelled by the extra traffic caused by the Dunedin Exhibition, and by the brisk trade in flax. The railway revenue and expenditure for the past six years have been as follows :—

Revenue. Expenditure. Excess. 1885-S6 ... 1,044,305 ... 693,775 ... 350,530 1886-87 ... 992,187 ... 095,771 ... 296,416 1887-88 ... 981,826 ... 699,750 ... 282,076 ISSS-89 ... 1,001,134 ... 641,118 ... 360,016 1889-90 ... 1,093,340 ... 656.698 ... 436,642 1890-91 ... 1,113,287 ... 701,000 ... 412,287 But although there has been during last year an increase in the revenue, there is a greater increase in the expenditure, and the net profit is about £24,000 less than in the previous year. The Commissioners, in their report of last year, estimated that the expenses of working for this year would be £678,000, so that they underestimated by £23,000. They said then they would have put the figure lower but for the rise in iron and stores consequent on the strikes in Europe. It is probable that the increases on this account have been more than they anticipated.
