DRAUGHTS MATCH.

A contest between the players in the city and those resident in Vonsonby and Newton (combined) took place at the Park Hotel on Saturday night. It was originally intended to play twelve a-side. The suburban players mustered in strong numbers, but some of the city representatives failed to put in an appearance ; it was therefore decided to play nine a side. Mr. H. Henderson was captain of the city team, and Mr. C. Gunthorpe led their opponents. The greatest cordiality and good feeling was manifested throughout the proceedings. Four games were contested between each pair, and at the call of time the scores were found to be as follows :—

At the conclusion of the match a meeting (somewhat of the nature of social gathering) was held, Mr. P. Oliphant, president of the Auckland Draughts Club, being in the chair. A resolution was carried instructing the managing committe to resuscitate the club, which had been in a dormant condition during the summer months ; and it was also decided that a tournament should take piace at an early date, Mr. Oliphant stating that lie would present a prize for competition. Mr. H. Henderson was elected to fill a vacancy in the committee owing to a member having resigned. Mr. Henderson' intimated his intention of issuing a challenge to Mr. Gunthorp, the present champion of Auckland, for the possession of the title and the silver Cup ; and, should the match come off, it will be watched with considerable interest by the devotees of Dama, as both are strong players, and a keen contest would be anticipated.
