Richmond was busily engaged yesterday in landing her cargo of fruit and other island produce which has so far proved to be in good order. The barque Conference which is fixed from Newcastle with coal to Mr. J. J. Craig is expected to sail to-day or next day for this port. _ At the Calliope Dock yesterday Mr. C. Bailey and his men made a vigorous start upon the contract-for re-stripping, caulking, and recoppering of H.Ms. Rapid. There are at present in Farm Cove, Sydney, H.M. ships Ringdove, Royalist, Swinger, and Paluma. The Swinger's crew have Deen at work repairing the rigging and making ready it is presumed for word to start for Plymouth where the ship is ordered, her commission on the Australian station having expired. Two years ago the Duke of Wellington was to have been relieved as flagship at Portsmouth by a more modern vessel. Only within the last month, however, has H.M.s. Nelson, so well-known here, been ordered to be fitted for the billet; so that at least until the end of the year the obsolete old Duke is likely to occupy her present position. » The Island schooner Jessie Niccol was berthed yesterday at the Queen-street Wharf, where she at once began to put out her Rarotongan oranges, which were landed in excellent condition. The Naval authorities in the House of Commons are looking forward with much interest to an announcement which is expected from the Government respecting an addition to the force of the Royal Navy of 6000 bluejackets. It is thought that considerable difficulty will be experienced in obtaining a sufficient number of lieutenants to command the new force. Last evening the s.s. Australia left for the East Coast and Wellington, with general cargo and passengers. The barque Bella is making good progress with the discharge of her grain at the Quay»treet Jetty. It is exnected that by to-morrow the barque Valparaiso will be a full ship, with gum and flax for New York. The Little Agnes has gone to Whangarei for another load of coal. The steamer Arawa left Rio for London on Saturday with her cargo of meat in good order. H.M.s. Pigmy lost 40 feet of her keel while ashore in Japanese waters, though the authorities alleged that her injuries were only trivial. Consequently she had to be repaired at Nagasaki. The armoured cruiser Dupuy de Lome, a vessel 374 feet long, 6300 tons, with engines of 14,000 horse-power, and a speed of 20 knots, is now being fitted out at Brest to replace the Triomphante, as flagship of the French squadron on the China station.

THE AXJSTRALIEN'S RUN TO MARSEILLES. . An Incident is mentioned in connection With" the Messageries Maritimes Company's Australien's voyage from Sydney to Marr seilles, which will be read with interest. One

of the passengers writer: —'" The steamer Australien, (XXX) tons, Captain Didier, belonging to the Messageries Maritimes Company, arrived at Marseilles on January 30, at seven o'clock a.m., from Now Caledonia and Australian port, with 223 passengers and a full cargo. The trip was a splendid one, the speed being 15£ knots on the outward and homeward voyage. The Australien finished her voyage in a noble manner, by saving the Austrian Lloyd's steamer Apis, which was flying signals of distress on January 28, at ten o'clock p.m., 80 miles: from Bonifacio. Captain Didier went to her assistance, and towed her into Ajaccio to- the great surprise of the population, who did not expect to see a steamer like the Australien. The Apis was bound from Samoa for Cette, laden with wine, but had broken her main shaft three hours previous to meeting the Australien. The captain of the Apis thanked Commander Didier with effusion, but was not a little surprised when, upon offering to pay for the services rendered, he received the reply that French sailors consider it a duty to assist their equals, and that the saving of life and property they do not make a business affair. A very unforeseen incident, which deserves mentioning, took place at Melbourne. The _ French steamer Australien was anchored in close proximity to the German mail boat Kaiser Wilhelm 11. The Australien having finished her operations, went to sea before her opponent, and when passing at a short distance of the stem of the Kaiser Wilhelm the band on board the latter struck up the ' Marseillaise,' to the great surprise of all on board the Australien. Captain Didier saluted immediately with the national tricolour as a token of respect and gratitude for the unique courtesy on behalf of the German captain.
