THE V. R.C. MEETING.

BUNGEBAH WINS THE NEWMARKET HANDICAP. ANOTHER VICTORY FOR CARBINE. Mi Auociation.— Electric Telegraph.—Copyright. . Melbourne, February 28. The V.R.C. Autumn Meeting opened to-day. 5 The weather was magnificent, a delicious cool breeze tempering the sun's rays. The 3 attendance is estimated at 25,000. His Excellency the Governor and suits being among those present. ( The betting was very spirited on the opening events of the day, but the Newmarket ; Handicap was looked upon in the light of such a " dead bird" for Bungebah that business on that event was comparatively restricted. The New South Wales horses ' proved perfectly invincible in the four first events, albeit had Hales not eased his mount after silencing Enuc, The Admiral would assuredly have won the St. Leger Stakes, Gibraltar's performance was a sterling one, seeing that his condition was none too good, he being very much on the big side. The Admiral was also lacking in this respect. Correze, although heavily backed by the public, was never dangerous at any part of the race, and finished fourth, but will doubtless display improved form in the Australian Cup on Tuesday. Norbert and Correze were in front of Enuc and The Admiral till the abattoirs were reached but from there until half-, way up the straight Enuc looked all over a winner. Then Hales cut him down with The Admiral; but the " grand _ horseman " was fairly caught napping by Nerricker on Gibraltar, whose long stride proved too much for the favourite when set going again. Bungebah's victory in the Newmarket Handicap was extremely disastrous to the bookmakers, the New South Wales and Victorian punters putting down their pieces as if it was all over ; ana, indeed, the result was never in doubt. The following are the results — The Hopeful Stakes, a sweepstakes of ssovs each, with SOOsovs added. The owner of second horse to receive GOsovs, and the owner of the third 30sovs out of the stake. Betting : 100 to 4 against Bungebah, 100 to 8 Fernando and Matador, 100 to 7 Merri- j ment and Pygmalion; 100 to 5 Churchill, Wild Rose, Prattler, Conceit, Bendigo, and Investigator, 100 to 4 Utter and Gladstone, 100 to 3 Deerswood, Ginger, Teksurn, Gold Reef, and Radoo, 100 to 2 the others. The flag fell at the second attempt to a good start, Bungebah, near the rails, being one of the first to move. Bendigo, Pygmalion, Courteous, Prattler, Wnimberel, Pron Pudor, Wild Rose, Radoo, Little Bob, Linburn, and Victor Hugo also getting well away. After traversing a furlong the favourite was well in front, Wild Rose and Radoo in the centre of the course, being the most prominent of the others. Entering the course proper Bungebah had still further improved his position, with Prattler running up second, followed by Courteous, Pygmalion, Wild Rose, Radoo, Deerswood, and Matador, the latter coming very fast. At the distance post Bungebah had everything settled, Prattler being fully half a-dozen lengths behind him, and next to him came Deerswood, Matador, Ginger, and Pygmalion. From this out Gainsforth took matters comfortably on the favourite, whom he landed an easy winner by five lengths. The others fought out a desperate finish, Matador eventually coming with a late run, which secured for him second honours by half a neck from Deerswood, who had a neck advantage of Prattler. _ Then came Wild Rose, Too Soon, Investigator, Courteous, Gladstone, Linburn, the Promised Land, Gold Reef, Radoo, and.. Fernando, in the order named, Utter, Teksurn, and Toastmaster, finishing last. The official time for the race was lm. 16is., while several privatewatches made it lm. 15^8. At Flemington this morning Vengeance put in a good gallop over a mile and a-half Walter Hickenbotham, trainer for the Hon. D. S. Wallace, states, in his opinion, that the Australian Cup, to be run on Tuesday, lies between Megaphone and Highborn. Power, the well-known jockey, is reducing his weight in order to ride Enuc in the Cup. Mr. Busby, the owner of Bungebah, won a very large stake over the gelding's victory in the Newmarket Handicap, and expresses his intention of withdrawing him from the turf, and utilising him as a ladies' hack. DUNEDIN JOCKEY CLUB'S MEETING. Dunkdin, Saturday. The Dunedin Jockey Club were not so fortunate with the third day's autumn meeting as the two previous ones. A shower fell about half an hour before the starting of the first race, just as most people were preparing to start, and as a consequence the attendance, though large, was not up to the usual standard on Saturday of ' these meetings. % The day continued dull and threatening till late in the afternoon, when several showers fell. The sport was of an excellent character, the finishes being close and exciting and the winners hard to pick. The favourites, where there were any, did not by any means have the best of it. Mr. G. G. Stead, _of Christchurch, had a turn to-day winning the Hopeful and Marshall Memorial Stakes respectively with Carronade and Clan Ronald, Ihjui of which were bred at Auckland. Mr. L. McLean acted as starter throughout the dav, and was fairly successful with the flag. The sum of £12,007 was invested on the machines, making a total of £35,487 for the three days. The following are the results Handicap Hurdle Race of lOOsovs, second lOsovs, third ssovs. Two miles and a-half. Hopeful Stakes of loOsovs with sweeps, second horse 20sovs, third lOsovs. Six furlongs. Mr. G. G. Cotton, jun.)... 3 Inez (Sst 71b), Cajolery (Sst 21b), Bay King (7st 91b), Tassy (7st 71b), and Lady Sockburn (Gst 101b also started. Cajolery, as usual, played up very badly. An indifferent start saw Carronade first away, Huguenot being slow to move losing several lengths. As the field settled down Inez and Bay King's colours were to be seen close up to Carronade, with the rest bunched. At the back of the course Huguenot had made up her ground in a surprising manner. Carronade still led, with Inez second, and Lady Mab third. As they rounded the turn Huguenot had gone up to second tion. Carronade had a slight advantage on reaching the straight, but the rest w..e so well together that there was scarcely any advantage. A fine set-to down the straight followed; but Carronade held her own to the end, and won by a length from Huguenot, Lady Mab, haff-a-length away, third, Cajolery fourth, Lady Sockburn, Inez, and Bay King finishing in that order. Time, lm. 17s. Dividends, £9 6s and £8 7s. Foreury Handicap of 300sovs; second, 50sovs; third, 20sovs. One mile and a quarter. Major George's ch m Fiesole, by Ingomar— Florence, Ost 71b (Golding) ... _ ... 1 Messrs. M. and C. Hobbs' br c Prime Warden,Sst lib (Derrett) 2 Mr. Stephenson's b h Occident. Sst 71b (White) ... 3 Hilda (9st 41b), Cruchfield (7«t Gib), Palliser (Gst 121b), Way land (6st 91b), also ran. After a lot of false starts, the lot were sent away well together, Fiesole taking up the running, with Hilda last. As they passed the stand Cruchfield was leading, with Fie.sole second, Wayland being next, with Palliser. Occident, and Hilda in that order. Round by the windmills, fiesole closed on Fairchild, and Hilda and Prime Warden made a forward movement. At the back of the course, Fiesole had taken a lead of Cruchfield, Prime Warden running second, with Hilda handy. Rounding into the straight, Occident had to go wide ; but coming fast, he and Prime Warden were second, and Cruchfield next. Apparently being done with, the whip had to be taken out to Fiesole, and she came all the way up the straight under punishment, winning by fully two lengths, Occident and Prime Warden almost a dead heat for third place; Cruchfield, Palliser, Hilda, and Wayland finishing in that order. Time, 2m. 13s. Dividends : £14 Ss Gd and £15 6s. Totalisator investments: 132 Fiesole, 594 Prime Warden, 470 Occident, 460 Hilda, 176 Cruchfield, 275 Palliser, 59 Way- j land. Mr. Stead's ch c Clan Ronald, by St. Leger —Scottish Lassie, Gst 9lb (Thomas) ... 1 Major George's cli c Reprisal, Sst 121b (Brown) 2 Hon. G. McLean's ch f Pique, Sst 41b (Clifford) 3 Florrie (7st 41b) also ran. Florrie was made a hot favourite. The splendid start saw Reprisal and Florrie in the van, Clan Ronald being very slow to move. As they settled down Florrie, Reprisal, and Pique were neck and neck. Florrie took a slight lead further on, and as they rounded the bend Clan Ronald came with a great run., caught, and passed the other three. Turning into the straight, Florrie was done with, and the whip had to be laid on Pique. Clan Ronald sailed up the straight, Thomas ju3t having to shake him up once, and won by a good two lengths, Pique, a length and a-half away, third. Time, lm. 17s. Dividends, £3 lGs 6d and £4 4s. Flying Handicap of lOOsovs, with a sweep of 2sovs for second horse. One mile. Mr. W. Russell's br c Breadalbane, by Cadogan—Albany mare, 7st6lb (Cusdiii) 1 Mr. H. Craig's b f Lady Mab, Gst (Cotton) ... 2 Mr. W. Bobbett's ch li Quadrant, 7st 101b (T. Buddicombe) 3 Dispute (7st 71b), Dormeur (Gst 121b), Tempest (Gat 101b). Miss George (Gst Sib), Forest King (Gst 51b), Crown Jewel (Gst) also ran. After a lot of fiddling they were sent away to a good start, Quadrant showing in the van. At the windmills corner Dormeur took up the running and placed three or four lengths between himself and Quadrant, who led Lady Mab by half a length, Breadalbane and Crown Jewel coming next. There was no change as they ran along the back of the course, but when nearing the quarter-mile post Dormeur began to comc back. Rounding into the straight Doimeur cried a go, and Quadrant led into the straight. The field having closed lip very much, a fine race up the straight resulted in Breadalbane, who came fast, winning by half a lenghth from Lady Mab, who in turn beat Quadrant by half a length, Crown Jewel fourth. Time, lm. 47sec. Dividends, £2 16s Gd and £3 4s. Maiden Two-year old Stakes Handicap of lOOsovs, second lOsovs, third ssovs. Hon. G. PAKURANGA HUNT CLUB'S MEETING. « The Pakuranga Hunt Club's annual race meeting was held at Ellerslie on Saturday. There was a very small attendance of the public, and the sport was not of an exciting character. His Excellency the Governor, and the Countess of Onslow were present, accompanied by Captain Guthrie, A.D.C., Mr. VValrond, and Lieutenant Grant, and Mr. Nash, of H.M.s. Curacoa. The Viceregal party drove out to the course, and were received by Messrs. J. P. Philson, W. Percival, and Wakefield, officers of the club. During the afternoon they were entertained at,. a light luncheon served in the private dining-room" in the grand stand by Mr. T. McEwin. Mr. Morrill was judge of. the racing, Mr. Garrett clerk of the scales, and Mr. Brown clerk of the course. The arduous duties of starter were admirably performed by, Mr. E. D. Halstead. Mr. H. H. Hayr was an untiring secretary. Notwithstanding that the attendance was very moderate, speculation was j brisk, as. was .shown by the fact that £2713 was the sum invested in the totalisators, which wera worked as one machine. Sir. Hunter's excellent band played a well-chosen programme of music. The following are the results of the racing : — Handicap Maiden Plate of 25sovs. One mile. Mr. A. Austin's g g Macaroni, aged, 7st, including 71b overweight (Hodson) ... 1 Mr. Maitland's Ma 13oughal, 7st 71b (Cook) . j... ... ... 2 Mr. Lyons' Tuna, Sst .{Manning) ... .... 2 Premiej, Brian Born, Captive, Warrior, Millifera, and Moderator, were the;, otber starters..^- Brian Born leilfrpm the start, but collapsed when Macaroni caught him in the straight, the latter winning by a neck from Ma Boughal; Tuna a bad third. General was first away, but Hopeful Kate was first into the straight, and led past the stand, the others close handy, ana Orakei last. Fishmonger and Cloth of Gold ran out from the others along the back of the course, and were ten lengths in front at the half-mile post, but entering the straight Fishmonger drew away, and won easily by three lengths. Time, 3ni 30.?5. Dividend, £3 16s. % . Novel Handicap, of 30sovs. Five furlongs. Mr. R. Williams's Bacchus, Sst 61b (Priest) 1 Mr. McMinamin's Prestissimo, S3t 101b (Wright) ... 2 Mr. Wilson's Premier, Sst 121b (Fletcher) 3 Comet and Flint also ran. Prestissimo led into the straight, but Bacchus coming very fast under the whip, wore him down, ana won a good race by iialf-a-length. Time, lm 7s. Dividend, £3 10a. The winner was offered for sale by auction by. Mr. D. B. Tonka, and bought in by the owner for £21. > Hunt Club Cup of oOsovs; the owner of second horse to receive Ssovb out of the stakes. One mile and a-quarter. Mr. T. Page's br m Antelope, aged, by Apremont —Miss Kate, Sst 41d (Taylor) 1 Mr. Roulston's br g Belmont, oyrs, 7st 4lb (Priest) 2 Mr. W. Bebbett's blk h Patchwork, syrs, 7st 81b (G. Smith) .3 Leorina (Dst 41b), Ingorina (Sst Gib), and Loch Ness (7st 121b) were the other starters. The start was a beautiful one. Loch Ness at once ran to the front, and passed the stand with a length's lead of Antelope, immediately in whose wake came Patchwork and Belmont, Leorina next, and Ingorina hist. Loch Ness continued to lead as they ran through the cutting, but at the half-mile post Antelope came with a great run, and having everything else beaten at the entrance to the straight, finished an easy winner by two lengths, about the same distance separating the second and third horses. _ Loch Ness was fourth. Time, 2in. 153. Dividend, £4 17s. Handicap Steeplechase of GOsovs, the owner of the second horse to receive Ssovs I out of the stakes. About two miles and a-iialf. Mr. G. This was one of the worst steeplechases ever seen at Ellerslie. All of the horses baulked repeatedly, and Begorrah, who was the first to get over the country, won by about a mile and a-half. Fishmonger led to the first obstacle, the water jump in front of the stand, but here General baulked, and Nap, who was running behind him, followed his example. Fishmonger thus gained a commanding lead, but he too refused to clear the hurdle near the cutting, anil Begorrah, coming on, took command, only in his turn to baulk at the top of the hill. Persuaded over, however, he led on to the flat, about 30 lengths in front of General, Fishmonger taking a course outside the flags at the stone wall, and thus dropping out of the race. When Begorrah cleared the old water jump he was followed by Nap, who had steadily refused the obstacle until he had been given a lead over it; but General next stopped there. The climax of the fiasco was reached when Begorrah, who was winning easily, threw his rider at the entrance of the straight, and bolted, amid yells of laughter, followed by Nap, who had yet another round to travel. Begorrah was -soon caught and remounted, and ran home the winner, while Nap was taken back on to the course, and completed the remainder of the distance, finishing second, General being third. Dividend, £3 9s. * Handicap Flying Stakes of 30sovs. Six furlongs. Mr. D. McKinnon'sblkh Loch Ness, 4yrs, ! Bst (Hodson) 1 Mr. Page's Antelope, 9st (Taylor) ... ... 2 Mr. Miller's Brian Boru, 7st (Priest) ... 3 Patchwork, .Scot Free, Ironbark, _ Captive, t and Sweet Lavender also ran. Brian Boru, leading from the start, was first past thp half-' mile post, where the field 'closed up. and entering the straight they grouped on almost even terms, but when they were in a line for home Loch Ness came from the ruck, and, beating off Brian Boru, won easily by three lengths, Antelope third, a length behind the second horse, and Patchwork fourth. Time, lm. 20s. Dividend, £6 15s. Ladies' Purse Handicap of 20sovs. One mile. Mr. W. Robertson's cii m Leorina, aged, l'2st (Mr. E. D.
