YACHTING. IN WELLINGTON.
• THE MARITANA BEATEN. [BY TELEGRAPH. —PRESS ASSOCIATION.] Wellington, Saturday. In the special yacht race on Saturday, which was arranged to allow the Auckland yacht Maritana a chance to compete with the Southern craft, owing to her being unable to engage in the regatta on Thursday, five yachts started, the Isca being scratched at the start. The Mima carried away her peak-halyards, putting her at a disadvantage. In rounding the buoy after the first turn, the Mascotte led by about five minutes, the Mima being next, and the Maritana a minute behind her, with the Pastime six minutes behind the Auckland yacht. In coming home, the Maritana carried away her topmast off Kaiwarra, and the Mascotte won on time allowance by twelve seconds from the Mima. The times of arrival were: Mascotte, sh. ISm. 31 is.; Mima, sh. 24m. 18is.; the rest being entirely out of the race. If the halyards of the Mima had not carried away, by which at least two minutes were lost, the Wellington yacht must have won.
