In consequence of the Otorohanga-and Cambridge race meetings and other sports in Waikato taking place on. the 29th inat., the committee of the Waikato Swimming Giaia, which was to have held its annual races on that day, have deferred them to Friday, the 20th .February. As will be seen by advertisement in another page, the Half-Mile Championship of New Zealand and the 150 Yards Championship of New Zealand will be competed for on the Hamilton Lake -on that day. The annual picnic for the school children, their parents, and the people of the district generally was held here yesterday in .a convenient and central paddock of the township. There was a large gathering, especially of young people, the ladies, in consequence of it being busy harvest time, were in excess of the gentlemen during the day by nearly ten to one, but at the dance in the Town Hall in the night, the gentlemen rolled up, and the place was well-filled. There was throughout the whole time an ample supply of choice and substantial refreshments, anil good music. Mr. Kallender's seat for Cambridge was declared he having been absent for four consecutive meetings, and the clerk was instructed do advertise the election to fill up the vacancy. The following tenders were dealt with by the meeting, for building a bridge on the Rangi. riri-Churchill Road and a bridge at Meremere —A. Douglas, Rangiriri Bridge, £29 12s ; Meremere Bridge. £68155; F, Hubbard, Rangiriri Bridge, £20 12s 6d; Meremere Bridge, £58 10s (accepted); Heathcote, !x»tb bridges, £93; A. Nkol, £94 lis; R. Melville, £88 19s. The following tenders were dealt with : —For gravelling Great __ South Road through the Hnntly township: R. Muir, 2s 9d per cubic yard; T. Clarkin, 2s. The matter was l»ft over to allow of ascertaining whether better gravel could not be found on the other side of the river. The accounts were ordered to subject to approval of the Council. The engineer stated that Messrs. Hubbard would! have the Matakuri bridge completed by Thursday next. He was instructed not-to open the new road until the settlers who had undertaken to fence the road had done so, nothing having been done in this matter. Accounts to the amount of £243 10s were ordered to be paid. The Rangiriri Riding was stated to be £255 in credit.

A native was brought into the hospital today from Takaroa with a malignant growth, on the leg, which will probably render amputation necessary.
