LAW AND POLICE.
R.M. COURT. -Thursday. [Before Dr. Giles, U.M.I Undefended Casks. — Judgment was given for the plaintiffs in the following undefended cases :—Bank of New Zealand v. George Hulme, claim £33, costs £3 12s ; North New Zealand Farmers' Co-operative Association v. W. Forbes, claim £7 0s Gd, coats £1 12s. Wμ. Craig v. J. J. Holland.—Claim £32 7s 7d. Mr. Theo. Cooper (for Dr. Laishley, unavoidably absent) appeared for the plaintiff and Mr. Cotter for the defendant, it, was decided that this case should be referred to the arbitration of Mr. Thos Mahoney, and that it should be adjourned for three weeks in order to allow Dr. Giles to give judgment for the amount decided upon. Gunson and Martin v. C. H. Greekhead. —Claim £6 1 Is 6d for goods delivered. After hearing the evidence Dr. Giles gave judgment for the defence. W. R. Cook v. Hy. Edwards.—Claim £3 10s for goods delivered. Dr, Giles gave judgment for defendant. POLICE COURT. -Thursday. [Hpfore Messrs. A. Urortife aiii< J. M. McLachlan, J.IVh.I Vagrancy. — Mary Harry and Annie Robertson were charged with having no lawful arid visible means of support. Detective Hughes gave evidence ae to the conduct and character of the accused, who resided in Chapel-street. Euch prisoner was sentenced to three months with hard labour.
Alleged False Pretences. — Francis Arthur Watson was charged with having, on the 9th December, unlawfully and knowingly, by certain false pretenoes, presented a cheque to Carl Kohn, at Gisborne, for the payment of £01 10s, and obtained from him one watch and chain, valued at £26; and one diamond and sapphire bangle, valued at £36. Mr. W'. J. Napier appeared for the defendant, and asked for a remand until Friday, 30th instant, to give him time to communicate with his witnesses. Hβ would ask that bail might be allowed. Inspector Brohara desired that such bail should be substantial, and suggested two sureties in £75 each, and prisoner himself in £100. The remand as applied for was granted, bail being allowed as above. Alleged Forgkd Chkqub. —Henry John Philips was charged with having feloniously, with intent to defraud, ou 20th January, uttered and disposed of a cheque for the payment of £12 JOs, drawn on the Union Bank of Australasia, well knowing the same to be forged. Mr. VV. J. Napier appeared for the defence. Inspector Broham awked for a remand until Monday next, which application was granted.
