HUNTLY MINE ACCIDENT.
TO THK EDITOR.
Sib, —In your report of the inquest, m issue of the 27th instant, you make Thomas Carless, one of the witnesses, to say in reply to a question to Mr. Hay re the timbering of the mine, "It is my opinion that that dip was as safely and securely timbered as it) could have been." This is surely an error either in reporting or printing, as the whole of the evidence of this man, to any person reading it, would appear to be quite the contrary to what you have made hira say, as further on in his evidence, in reply to Mr. Wilson, he says, "1 now call ta memory that I expressed my opinion ta Caeby, when working at the Taupiri Extended Coal Company's mine, with reference to this dip, that unless the main timbering of this dip was better stayed than what had been put, there would be an accident. This was when the tenders for the present extension of the dip were called for.' —lam, etc., Enquirer. Huntly, 29th December, 1890.
