The anniversary soiree of the Alexandrastreet Primitive Methodist Sunday-school was held last night in the schoolroom. A very large number of friends sat down to a most enjoyable tea s after which a public meeting: was held in the church, at which Mr. E. Withy presided. The report read l>y the secretary, Mr. Smith, showed that the school was in a flourishing condition, the number of children having increased. There were 318 children on the roll, who were under the care of 27 devoted teachers. Mr. David (Joldie then read the balancesheet, and in doing so explained that the expenses for the past year had been exceptionally heavy. The total receipts amounted to £143 16s, and the expenditure £187 17s 9d, leaving a debit balance of £44 Is 9d. The chairman, Mr. Withy, congratulated the school on its successes, and in the course of his remarks said that he had no faith in State assistance in matters of religion for old or young. Home religion arid Bible instruction should not be neglected. If our country is to be better managed it is only by carrying out the principles laid down in the Bible. The Rev. Mr. Cocker, Mr. Smith, Sir William Fox, and other friends also spoke a few •words, and an excellent musical programme was provided by a large choir. Our Aratapu correspondent, writing on Friday, says -.-—Edward Hughes, of Tokatoka, was charged this morning before Messrs. J. A. Walker and T. Webb with laving committed an assault on Mrs. Gaynor, the wife of the proprietor of the Tokatoka Hotel. The man was drunk at ibe time. He, however, pleaded not ■guilty, and was represented by his counsel, .Mr. N. A. McLeod, of Dargaville. One of the witnesses for the prosecution failed to put in an appearance, though subpoenaed, and Mrs. Gaynor was the only wituess. On the advice of Mr. J. A. Walker the case was postponed till Monday, and a warrant issued for the appearance of the witness McCoy.
