NEWTON BOROUGH COUNCIL.

The usual meeting of the Borough Council took place last evening. Present : Messrs. Ambury (Mayor) in the chair, Webloy, Donald, Brown, Cox, English,and Warnock. Water Consumption.—The Town Clerk reported that the consumption of wator in the borough for the past fortnight was 107,000 gallons. Mr. Brown drew attention to the singular fact that more water was consumed after a heavy rainfall than at any other time. The Mayor corroborated the statement. Apparently the ratepayers did not the think the water cost as much in wet weather. The turncock was instructed to detect cases of waste of water in the Borough and report them. Bridge Road.—Messrs. Hellaby Bros, requested that metal be laid on the road from Cox's Creek Bridge towards their Abattoirs. Referred to the Streets Committee with power to act. Rose Road.—Question of constructing a cesspit in Roso Road was referred to the Streets Committee with power to act. Drainage of Mackelvie-stkeet, &c.— Tin report as to this work was adopted, and engineer's plans authorised to be prepared for adoption, and tenders to bo called for.
