CHRISTCHURCH DIOCESAN SYNOD.
ADDRESS BY BISHOP JULIUS. [BY TELEGRAPH.—PRKSS ASSOCIATION.]
Christchurch, Tuesday. Thk annual session of the Diocesan Synod was opened this afternoon by Bishop Julius. In the course of his address, His Lordship said ho noted with grave concern the diminished stipends of the clergy. The minimum proposed by the Synod was £230 annually, yet a dozen clergy were receiving less. He paid a high tribute to the memory of Bishop Light foot, of Durham, Canon Liddon, and Cardinal Newman, whose deaths have occurred since the last session of the Synod. He advocated the formation of a pensions fund for the clergy, not of on* diocese, but of the whole colony. Referrirg to education, he said the State in t.Us colony had taken the important, tasl of education upon itself, and in the fulfilment of its self-imposed duties had deliberately rejected the foundation of all true education, and built its house upon said. 1 1i..v0 no quarrel (he continued) vith the Education Act, except upon this rne point. I do not desire a grant in aid of denominational schools, still less do I desire what is called Bible reading without note or comment, which I think to be worse than useless. But 1 do ask for such solid religious education as is given, for instance, by the London School Board, Mid for the recognition of religion on a tnie basis of sound morality. I have no foith in protests. Wo must deliver ou' schools by steady work and influence.
