Sir, —Some person, under the nom de. plume of " Flaxmill Owner," writes to your valuable paper of this morning's dato about flax, stating amongst other absurd thing* that flax that ie worth £'2o per ton has often to be sold at £16 and £17 pec ton because merchants will not bid against each other. If this gentleman had pent bis flax home for sale he would have found out to his co*t that £14 is about the price he would have received here; and if he had taken tho trouble to peruse the various reports that you publish from (J. Spurling and other brokers in London he would not have written such niitsstatemente as he has. He will there find the following prices that have been obtained for Auckland brands in London by the last two mails :—JVV, £22 ; KB, £•20 15s ; RFM, £20 10s ; FG&Co, £19 10s ; HB, £19 10s; (>, £19; JO, £19 10s; W'S, £19 15s ; Wβ, £18e lO.s ; \VB\V, £19 IC-β ; WB, £17 10s. Let him deduct £7 10a per ton cost of shipping and selling in London for the above prices, and whafe is the value of flax in Auckland at the present) time? We may also inform this astutegentleliiau that contracts have been made for large quantities to be delivered at New York and Boston, where the largest quantity of our flax is consumed, at prices varying from £20 10s to £23 for tip-top qualities. Now, any man that can subtract) one from two can easily see at what prica these merchants can give here for our flax. This charge of a ring is simply ab. , urd, for we will guarantee that if the question was pub to any merchant who has been i-urchasinjj and consigning either wool or fltx for the last 20 year* he would say loss, lot >, loss all through.
