THE GOLDFIELDS.

[FROM OCR OWN correspondent.] Thames, Friday. Mat Q.vxbv.—'The crushing which is now proceeding for this company at the Cambria Battery is shaping for a very satisfactory return at present, although for the first day or two anticipations were not realised. There is nothing fresh to report from the mine. Magnolia.—The manager is now confident that the footwall of the large reef intersected in the new low level has been passed through at last, after driving 20 feet of quartz. A good class of sandstone now Erevails, and this morning a nice-looking sader, two or three inches thick, was intersected. The level is now in a distance of 120 feet. Pride of Karaka.—This company's mine is situated between the Adelaide and Dives mines on the face of the Una Hill, and operations have been commenced under the management of Mr James Hardman. The first work undertaken is the opening up of a new low level, and from 300 to 400 feet of driving should see what is known as McKenzie's reef to hand, after which several other well-known reefs will be intersected.

Lone Hand. —Several feet of the reef in the eastern drive at the low level were broken down on Thursday, but the point has not yet been reached where the break or flinty crosses the reef, although it is running pretty close to it. The reef is about nine inches in thickness, and looks very promising. It is intended to com mence crushing the quartz coming to hand from the stopos at the western end some time next week.

Trenton.—The tender of Mr. Martin and party, at 10s 9d per foot, has been accepted for extending the main crosscut ahead to intersect the Saxon new reef, and they will commence operations on Monday next. There is excollent sandstone country to commence driving in, and should it continue it is probable the reef will be to hand in about a month. Driving eastward has been commenced upon the No. 2 hangingwall reef, lately intersected near the Saxon boundary. Occidental. — For several days past operations in the eastern drive have been confined to stripping the reef, which is running through an excellent class of sandstone country, and pieces of quartz that have fallon from the reef have shown colours of gold. It is intended to keep on stripping for some time yet before breaking the reef down, as the Pride of Karaka flinty should be met with about 15 feet further ahead. A good quality of quartz is coming to hand from the stopes, together with frequent parcels of picked stone. It is intended to commence crushing the picked stone on hand to-morrow.

Dives.—Driving eastward upon the liangingwall reef at the intermediate level is being pushed ahead with considerable speed, the reef averaging about 18 inches in thickness and looking very promising, colours of fold being seen in the quartz at every reaking down. Two stopes are also in progress—the leading and second one—the reef being about the same size and of same quality as in tho drive. At No. 2 level twe stopes are in hand westward upon the reef, and from here occasional small parcels of picked stone are obtained. Driving upon the main flinty at No. 3 level is being continued a distance of 130 feet, having been driven since operations wore commenced, and in 30 or 40 feet more the Oddfellows' reef should be to hand. The flinty averages about six inches in thickness, and carries a good class of mineral, so that it is thought it is bound to have a good effect upon the first body of quartz it comes into contact with.

MINE MANAGERS' REPORTS. Prospectors (Puhipuhi).— Since work was resumed in Fraser's crosscut for the purpose of cutting No. 3 reef at a lower depth, it has bean extended 107 feet through a very good class of country, three lodes have been cut averaging in thickness from eight to twelve inches, the quartz looks very promising, showing some silver glance. No. 3 reef should shortly come to hand, and when cut will give fifty or sixty feet of backs in addition to what is already available on this reef at No. 1 level. No 1 level : Driving has been commenced on this reef in the south end, so that an examination can be made between this level and the crosscut as soon as possible after the reef has been cut. No. 2 level: Since work was started at this p'6int, the drive has been advanced fifty feet and timbered through the outer crust of the rock, we shall be through this in a few days, then the drives will be pushed ahead on a very nice looking reef about a foot thick, which will very likely open out wider as we advance into the hill. Magnolia.—The mine manager wired yesterday :— Got through the reef, splendid country, full of mineral veins. May Quken. —The mine manager wired yesterday that the quartz all told on hand is 100 tons, and the last two days' crushing nearly equal to best returns previous crushing. .
