A short time since the secretary of the Kansas Board of Agriculture had been makintr an investigation into the actual costs of producing the different crops in that State. He obtained returns from every country. He thus reports :—Taking the State as a whole, the average cost of producing a bushel of wheat is 49 cents, and that of graving a bushel of maize 21 cents. The bulk of both products for several years past has been sold at lower prices than these, so that it is clear that Kansas farmers have grown them at a loss. The same may be said of the ; farmers of Missouri, Illinois, Nebraska, and lowa, the secretary remarks, for although in certain sections of all these States the crops have yielded a profit, generally speaking they have nob paid expenses.
