THE AUCKLAND UNIVERSITY COLLEGE COUNCIL.

The Auckland University College Council met yesterday. Present: Hon. Colonel Haul tain (presiding - ), His Lordship Bishop Cowie, Rev. A. Reid, Dr. Giles, Messrs. J. H. Upton, E. Hesketh, J. Dilworth, R. Udy, and the Registrar (Dr. Kidd). Examinations. The Registrar reported that Professor Brown had stated that he wa swilling to examine at the annual examinations in subjects 4, 5, 6, and 13. He was, accordingly, appointed. Lease.—Mr. Smith asked permission to lease 10 acres at Taupiri, instead of the large tract previously applied for. The matter was referred to a committee. An Important Alteration.—The committee appointed to consider the scholarship question reported :— 1. The committee are unanimously of opinion that the restriction regulation No. 5, respecting the college scholarships should be removed, so that the holders of universty scholarships shall be eligible for college scholarships. 2. The committee do not recommend a change in regulation No. 1 respecting entrance or junior scholarships. The report was adopted. An Expensive Costume.—Professor Aldia wrote pointing out that the stipulation that recipients of diplomas should, at the public presentation, attend in academic costume, involved a much heavier tax on graduates than it was proper to lay on them, especially as they had to pay for their degree at the same time. He had f ound that the lowest price at which a gown, hood, and cap could be obtained in Auckland wtu about £8. At Durham a gown could be bought for £2, which, when other matters were considered, was a serious expense for an article worn only once or twice in a lifetime. It had occurred to him the Council might think it right to do something to lower the cost by procuring a number of gowns and hoods to be sold or hired to graduates ; and he should be glad to get estimates of cost from a tailor at Cambridge and another at Durham. The Council resolved that they did net think it desirable to take any such step as Professor Aldis suggested. Books.—A list of new books for the College library was submitted. It was stated Professors Brown and Aldis had ireported that these books were not urgently needed, if the Council had not the money required. The consideration of the matter ■was deferred.
