WHAKATANE COUNTY COUNCIL

The Council held its monthly meeting at Opotiki on the Bth instant. The members present were : Messrs. J. B. Gow (chairman), T. P. Drury, H. R. H«™, J. Walker, 8. C. Gordon, and A. Parkinson. The minutes of previous meeting and outgoing correspondence were read and approved. Works Done.—Mr. Cropp, county engineer, reported that the contract for painting the Otara and Waioeha Bridges had been satisfactorily performed. That the repairs authorised on the main road at Whakatane, and on the swamp road at Ruatuna, were completed, and asking for a further sum of £1.3 for widening this road ; also, that repairs to the amount of £3 are needed on the main road between the Waiotahi River and Ruatuna. Matakeripu Road.—Agreed to have estimate prepared for a bridle track on this road. Waiotahi Road.—Messrs. McFarlane and others wrote asking that repairs be made. The matter was allowed to stand over owing to want of funds. Licensing Expenses.—'The Town Board wrote covering a charge for £'20 19* 6d on account of that Board's share of Licensing Act expenses, and promising to pay the balance at an early date. Ferry.—The Otakeri ferryman wrote asking for £10 salary. Referred to engineer. Returns.The Colonial Secretary wrote asking for certain returns. The Chairman stated they had been forwarded. Funds. —The Property Tax Commissioner wrote covering voucher for £79 8s 6d, subsidies under the Local Bodies Finance and Powers Act. Te Poroporo-Te Teko Road.—The Sur-veyor-General wrote asking if the 'Council would undertake the expenditure of £50 on the maintenance and improvement of this road. Agreed that the sum be accepted. Tauranga-East Cape Road.—The Chairman reported that he had signed an agreement under which the Council would receive £96 Is for these roads. The agreement was laid on the table and approved. . Hawae-Maraenui Road.—The Treasury wrote covering £30 paid to the credit of the Council for the maintenance and repairs of this road. Proposed Waiotajii Riding.— return was laid on the table showing the numuer of ratepayers in the various parts of the Waioeha Riding. Mr. Drury proposed, and Mr. Gordon seconded, " That the parish of Waiotahi be made into a separate riding." Carried nan. con. Matata-Te Teko Road. — Mr. Drury moved, " That the Government be asked to place on the Estimates a sum for the repairs of this road, and also for the Matata-Te Puhe Road." Seconded by Mr. Gordon, and carried. The Main County Road.Agreed to ask the Commissioner of Crown Lands to reserve the road line through sections '200 to 203, Waiotahi. Tenders. —Tenders for advertising were opened as follow : —The Opotiki Herald, 2s per inch up to 6 inches } and Is per inch over that space ; the Opotiki Mail, Is 6d per inch all rot: d. The Mail's tender was accepted. The Chairman said he would hold over his motion to strike a rate. Accounts were passed for payment, and the meeting terminated.—[Own Correspondent.] '
