DEFEAT OF THE DERBY FAVOURITE.

THE SPRING STAKES WON BY CARBINE.

Press Association. '1 elegraph.—Copyright,

Sydney, September 13. The Australian Jockey Club's Spring Meeting opened to-day at Randwick. The weather was beautifully fine, and there was a very large attendance. The Derby gave rise to a great battle between Gibraltar, Gatling, and Whimbprel, the former gaining the judge's verdict from the Auckland colt Catling by a short head. In the Spring Stakes Carbine scored an easy victory.

The following are the delails of the racing

From a beautiful start, Titan and Whimberel were the first to move, the latter making the pace for Titan, who was eased a little, rushed to the front, and as the field swept past the stand he had three lengths the best of Gibraltar, who was followed by Titan, Paris, Bradley, Gatling, and Victor Hugo. This order was maintained until the seven furlongs post had been left behind when Whimbrel improved the pace and Victor Hugo began to move up. The order was, however, unchanged until the horses were within half -a - mile from home when (ratling and the favourite made their effort, and lessened the distance between them and the whilom New Zealaiuler. Whimbrel was the first into the straight, with Catling, Titan. Gibraltar, and Paris, close on his heels ; but at the distance past Gibraltar and Gatling were on terms with Mr. O'Brien's colt, and a desperate race ensued, resulting in a head victory for Gibraltar from Gatling, who was a neck in front of Whimberel, then followed Titan, Victor Hugo, Bradley, and Paris, in the order named. The second day of the Dunedin Hunt Club's races took place to-day. The weather was fine, but the attendance was scarcely so good as usual, due no doubt to labour troubles. NOT* i ON THE DERBY. [BY PHAETON.]

The defeat of Titan in the A.J.G. Derby on Saturday last is a fate that not unfrequently attends horses that realise exceptionally high prices. When the son of Chester was submitted to auction at Randwick in April last, after going through his two-year-old career with only one defeat against him, there ensued a great competition for his possession, and at 4600 guineas (the largest price ever paid for a gelding) he was knocked down to the Victorian turfite, Mr. E. G. Brodribb. Sinco April last the high priced gelding was popularly held to have a mortgage on both Derbies, and the support showered upon him for the V.R.C. blue riband was of such a consistent character as at one time to bring him to the absurd price of 2 to 1, and scarcely any other horse has been mentioned in connection with the race. The feeble exhibition of the son of Chester in Saturday's race does not augur well for his prospects of success in the more important event to be run at Flemington in November, and he will need to make a deal of improvement to have a show with his powerful opponents. Gibraltar, the winner, has not previously been known to fame, for in the only two engagements which ho fulfilled last season he failed to gain a situation, but he must have shown a great improvement in his work of late, and from the support that was awarded to him, he must have well satisfied his party of his ability to get a mile and a-half in brilliant time. Gatling ran the great colt many anticipated lie would, and it is indeed hard luck for Mr. Gannon to suffer a head defeat after the plucky manner in which he planked down his 2000 guineas for the son of Nordenfeldtand Petroleuse. Whimberel'sperformance was a really good one, and had not too much use been made of him, he might have been returned the winner, as it will be seen that he was only a neck away in third place. The time ('2m. 395.) shows that the race was run at a great pace, which may account for Titan's position. As Gibraltar, Gatling, and Whimberel pre all engaged in the V.R.C. Derby, that contest will this year be invested with a great amount of interest. Gibraltar is amongst those which Mr. Barnard let in the Melbourne Cup at the minimum (fist 71b), but according to the conditions of the race his victory in the A.J.C. Derby raises his impost to 7st 61b.
