THE HEADMASTERS REPORT For the Winter Term, li'9o. The Term opened amidst general satisfaction, owing to the result of the Bishop's Prizes Examination, which had just been published. From the pass lists it appeared that more than one third of the successful candidates belonged to this school. viz. :— Ist Gray, Kempt 'v 3rd Hall, George I Senior Grade, 6th Hall, James r Class I. 9th Wynyard, James J 3rd Stichbury, Charles \ 6th Devereux, Humphrey ( Senior Grade, oth Snelllng, Owen f class II 10th Frazor, William ) Ist Hammond, H. \ Junior Grade, _ , ' / Class 11. or a school of some forty boys, I respectfully submit that these results are brilliant, and 1 beg to return my heartiest thanks to Mr. SniallHeld who so ably led our boys to a great success ; to the' boys themselves tor that concentrated effort without which nothing worthy is to be won ; and especially to our old boys, Kempt Gray and James Hall, who came back once more to the scene of their former victories to contend for the renown of their old school. Who can doubt that boys that did so well at this examination, covering such a wide extent of ground, will do equally well at purely secular exanimations ? The matter will eoon be put to a decisive test, for several of these boys are preparing for the Junior Civil Service and Matriculation examinations. Meanwhile, is it of small importance that boys are thoroughly grounded in the fundamentals of their belief ? If we are to judge by the loud wailing one hears over a "Godless education" it is not; but, if we are to decide by the amount of practical support extended to this school by Church of England people, it must be a matter of small moment. _ Some persons may say that we sacrifice other subjects to impart so much religious knowledge. To that it ought to be sufficient to point out that two of our Old Boys, viz. : — LEWIN SHEPPARD And ALFRED TURNER, passed the recent examination of the Board of Education, and are now teaching under the Board. Finally 1 beg to refer to the subjoined testimonials. They were unsolicited, and ought to be conclusive ; but if they are not, then lappeal from the injustice of the present to the justice of the future, in the firm confidence that my boys will prove me right in the end, for the only final test of any system of education is the question " Does it produce good citizensi.e., those who "Fear God and honour the king.''
