The annual report of the Dead Letter Office is interesting, as usual. No fewer than 94,470 unclaimed letters were dealt with, and 51,943 book packets. Of articles of value found enclosed in dead letters were 156 post office orders, amounting to £571 ; 86 postal notes, £32 ; 29 bank drafts, £1162 ; cheques, £441 ; 2 dividend warrants; 9 promissory notes, £208; stamps, £15 ; bank notes, £149 ; gold, £6 10s; silver and copper, £1 12s: total, £2597 (shillings and pence generally omitted). Also 1 gold and 3 silver hunting watches, 2 Waterbury watches, 1 silver chain with greenstone pendant, 3 gold rings, 1 gold pin, 2 gold rings with stones, 1 greenstone pendant gold mounted, 4 brooches, 1 pair gold earrings, 1 greenstone cross, 1 New Zealand war medal, a shark's tooth silver mounted, 2 silver thimbles; 888 unclaimed registered letters were dealt with, and 147 letters were posted without addresses ; 21 letters were intercepted with libellous addresses, 218 imperfectly addressed ; 5067 letters were refused by the addressees; 18 were posted with previously used stamps.
