BOARD OF EDUCATION.
Tiif, ordinary meeting of the Board of Education was held yesterday afternoon. Present : Messrs. Udy (chairman), Lennox, Carr, and Cooper.
Chairman s Report.—Paparata: Committee report that the school had been temporarily closed owing to epidemic of diphtheria in district. Point Chevalier: Committee had been asked to forward vouchers showing actual coat of fencing. Pukekohe West: Committee have been informed that pupil teacher sent as substitute to West Maufeu School will return. Pukerimu : Teacher lias been referred to clause 70 of Board's regulations as to supply of school furniture and appliances. _ The following resignations have been received : Mr. G. M. Calvert, teacher, Te Mata; Miss M. S. Mulgan, assistant, Papakura; Miss M. M. Sinclair, Napierstreet. Mr. A. N. Scott has been requested to open school at Wellsford as early as possible, subject to approval of committee. The report was adopted. Balances.— The balances to date were as follows : — Education Fund, credit, £8479 l'2s 2d ; Buiding Fund, debit, £1991 8s 2d ; leaving a credit balance of £&488 4s ; Girls' High School, debit, £194 13s 4d. Karaka.— Communication was received asking the reason for the Board's refusal to establish a school for this district. It was resolved that in the opinion of this Board such a school is not required for the present. Omaha Homestead.—The application for the establishment of a school in this district was referred to the committee.
Epsom.—The teacher applied for the addition to his residence of an extra bedroom and kitchen. After some discussion, the application was declined.
Pokeno.— A report was presented showing that the coat of alterations requested for the school building would amount to about £500. It was agreed to grant this sum. Te Kopukct.The question of enlargement of the school in this district was deferred for the present. Repairs.—Aratapu : The Board agreed to grant money required for the papering of the teacher's heuse. Fairburn's Road: Jt'2 had already been granted for the clearing of the school site, and £110s additional was now applied for; the application was refused. Newmarket: An increase in the grant already made was applied for; the application was refused. Newton East : Plans were laid before the Board showing proposed improvements to the schoolground. It was agreed to submit the plans to the committee for inspection and suggestions. Appointment. — Waixvera: Miss L. Kilfoyle. License.The consideration of the report of the committee upon the teaching of elementary science was adjourned till next meeting.
