Melbourne, September 5. A CONSIDERABLE quantity of cargo has been put on board the Union Company's steamer Monowai, and as it is understood that a free crew has been engaged, it is probable the vessel will leave for New Zealand to-morrow.
The Trades Hall has received a cable from London, stating that firm assistance in coercing would be rendered by Unionists at home.
The Trades-hall Committee states that the credit balance of the assets account is over £44,000.
Sydney, September 5.
All the Broken Hill silver mines will be shut down on Wednesday, thus throwing out nearly 4000 miners.
The miners at Broken Hill propose to ask for an increase in wages. It is stated that foreseeing the impossibility of avoiding being locked out the men have resolved to strike, so that instead of forwarding large sums every week to assist other strikers they may themselves become entitled to strike pay.
Official returns show that there are 319,000 bona, fide working-men in the colony. 40,000 are members of Unions, and 9000 are on strike,
HELP FROM ENGLAND.
London, September 4.
The compositors are sending £500 to Australia. The committee of the Trades' Congress is actively working up subscriptions, and hopes to be able to remit considerably beyond £40,000.
The engineers have remitted £200 to Melbourne for the assistance of the strikers.
The dockers have arranged for 100" automatic boxes being placed at the railway stations to receive donations in aid of the Australian strikers. They have also decided to appeal to all the clergy and ministers in the United Kingdom to assist them. English companies and firms have cabled privately several thousand pounds in support of the employers, pastoralists, and shipping interests in Australia affected by the dispute arising out of the shearers' strike
