A SINGULAR CASE OF CONSPIRACY.
[BY TKLKGKAPH.—PRESS ASSOCIATION.] Dunedin, Thursday. At the Supreme Court to-day John Ray Waters and Adam Elliott, alias Stewart, pleaded not guilty to an indictment charging them with conspiracy. This case arose out of the discovery of a still in Walkerstreet, in which n man named Donnelly was found in custody, having been placed there by Elliott, while Waters informed the Commissioners of Customs. The two men after wards went to Invercargill, where apparently the same tactics were to have been pursued. Both were found guilty, the jury, however, recommending Elliott to mercy. Justice Williams sentenced Waters to two years' imprisonment, expressing regret that he could not make it heavier. Elliott was sentenced to six months' imprisonment.
