THE CITY COUNCIL AND THEIR CARTERS.
At a meeting of the Auckland City Council yesterday evening the Finance Committee submitted the following report regarding the wages of the carters in the employ of the Council: —Your committee reports that the rate of wages for carters is 7e per day, and finds that the Council's carters on steady work have usually been paid less than other carters. Mr. Trenwith said that the carters in the employ of the Council were members of the Union, and the demand of that body was £2 2s per week. They were very good men, and gave every satisfaction, but were in an unfortunate position, as they would have to receive the wages demanded by the Union. Mr. Warren said that anj carter getting 6s 6d a day regularly was paid more than many mechanics. Mr. Crowther moved " That the recommendation be granted subject to a month's notice." The Mayor pointed out that the men were subject to a week's notice now. Mr. Cooper pointed out that the men, in their letter applying for 7s a day, stated that they were not dissatisfied with the wage." they now received, and that they asked for the increase because of the demands of the Union. It was eventually decided, " Thab the Council does not see its way to acoede to the application of the carters for an increase o, ! wages to 7s per day.
