BOROUGH COUNCIL MEETINGS.

PAR NELL. The ordinary meeting of the Parnoll Borough Council was held last night. Present : Messrs. Sealoy (Mayor), Savage, Gay, McConnoll, Coleman, Gilmour, Augur, and McCabe. Cleveland Road.—Mr. Frater wrote, asking the Council to give instructions for a few loads of scoria to beputon the path fronting the properties of Mrs. O'Neil and Mrs. Robertson, Cleveland Road. The state of tho path in this place had been for some time altogether unfit for traffic. The Council atrreod that this should bo attended to immediately. Nigiitsoii..—Edwin Hely wrote, making a complaint in connection with the nightsoii men. It was decided to refer the matter to the Inspector of Nuisances to report upon. Fiuk Insurance.The Town Clerk of tho Blenheim Borough Council wrote forwarding a scheme of municipal and co-oporativo firo insurance suggested by Mr. Purser, of Blenheim, for the consideration of the Council, and asking lor remarks or suggestions thereon ; also, if tho Council deemed it advisable, asking for assistance to get an Act passed to go'> the object effected. Referred to the Legal and Financo Committee.

Burgess Roll.—R. S. Reynolds wrote requesting that his name be placed on tho burgess roll. Request granted. accounts.—Accounts to the amount of £25 9s 3d were passed for payment. Street Committee's Report.—l. That tho asphalt footpath in Road, near Mr. Brigg'sshop requires repairs. The Council decided that necessary repairs bo done. 2. Thatthoswampiugof Dr.Maunsell's paddock might bo prevented by means of a culvert in Scarboro' Lane. It was agreed that tho culvert should bo formed. 3. That the footpath, channel, etc., in St. George's Bay Road be repaired. Agreed to. 4. That the kerbing and water channel must be lowered on the north side of Alpha Road from 12 to 18 inches, in accordance with previous recommendation, and that the soil be used for improving the slope both of the road and of the footpath, so as to carry the water readily into tho lowered channel. Deferred till next meeting. Nuisance. —Tho Inspector of Nuisances reported that he had regularly • inspected tho slaughterhouses, and had found no cause for complaint, lie had to report a nuisance in Campbell Terrace. An old man was living there, who keeps three dogs in a lean-to, only cleaning it out on Sunday morning. The premises were most disgustingly filthy, and were enough to create a plague. Referred to the Inspector of Nuisances to take action as he thought best. NEWTON. The usual meeting of tho Newton Borough Council took place last evening. Present: Messrs. Ambury (mayor), Riggs, Webley, (.'leghorn, Donald, English, Brown, Cox, Warnock.

Fire Brigade.—Tho Secretary of the Newton Firo Brigade, on behalf of tho Brigade, solicited patronage of the Council to a concert and dance un the 21st August, in aid of Brigade funds. Request was acceded to.

Consumption of Water.—The Town Clerk reported that consumption of water by meter during past fortnight was 140,000 gallons. Inspection of Auattoihs, &c.—The Town Clerk reported inspecting the abattoirs in the borough and the Tallow Company's premises. All was found in a satisfactory state.

Co-OPERATIVE INSURANCE PROPOSALS.— A letter wan received from the town clerk, Blenheim, who forwarded a scheme for cooperative municipal insurance. It was decided if a Bill came before Parliament with that object in view to give it support. Thk Beach Road.—The question of the state of the approaches to the Cox's Creek bridge came up for consideration, as they had been damaged by the late rains. Under the agreement with the Auckland City Council it was determined to call tho attention of that body to the necessity of their being repaired, the Newton Borough Council paying its moiety of the expense, «s already arranged. SUSSEX AND SURREY-STREETS. — Mr. Webley drew attention to the necessity of metalling these streets, 15 feet wide, to Richmond Road. An amendment by the Mayor, that the matter be referred to the Streets Committee, to report to the Council at the next meeting, was subsequently carried. ONEHUNGA. The ordinary fortnightly meeting of the Onohunga Borough Council was held in the Council Chamber last night. There were present: —His Worship Captain M. Yates (in the chair), Messrs. Barr, Austin, Bray, Mooney, Jackson, Tapp, Hastie, and Burden.

Borough Solicitors.—Messrs. Russell and Campbell wrote stating that on several occasions they had acted for and advised the Council on legal matters, among which was the question of tho Council's position as regards the waterworks' contractor's claim. Now they were requested to take up a case against the Council, and would like to know whether, under the circumstances, the Council wished to retain them. The Mayor said he thought the Council could do no better than appoint those gentlemen, and ho would move " That Messrs. Russell and Campbell be appointed as borough solicitors under the seal of the corporation." Mr. Mooney seconded the motion. Mr. Jackson moved as an amendment, "That Messrs. Russell and Campbell be informed that in any action to be brought against the Council by the waterworks' contractor, Messrs. Brookficld and Son will be appointed to defend the case." Mr. Tapp seconded the amendment, which was lost, and the original motion carried.

Flood Gate. — Messrs. Collidge and Weber wrote stating that t hey are prepared to pay half the cost of the erection of a flood gate at Slaughterhouse Road, provided the cost does not exceed £12. The Mayor moved that the engineer be instructed to prepare plans and specifications, and that tenders be called for the work, returnable at next meeting. Mr. Tapp seconded the motion, which was carried.

Municipal Insurance.—A letter accompanied by a circular was received from Mr. Nosewortny, Town Clerk of the Blenheim Council, suggesting that the matter of municipal insurance bo considered, and requested that tho assistance of the Council be given to have a Bill for tho purpose passed in Parliament. The Mayor said it was an important matter, and had been discussed in the town many timessince the waterworks were completed, owing to the disappointment experienced by the ratepayers in the matter of reduced insurance. He would move that the matter be referred to the FinancoCommitteo to consider and report at next meeting. Mr. Bray seconded the motion, which was agreed to. Financial Statement. —The Town Clerk reported that last meeting the credit balance of the Borough account stood at £850 16b 2d ; paid away during term, £33 2s lOd ; paid in, £164 2s 7d ; leaving a credit balance amounting to £981 15s lid. Leasing Reserve. —Mr. Jackson moved, seconded by Mr. Barr, "That, re Mr. Schnawcr's application for a site in Queenstreet for a timber yard, he be informed that tho Council cannot loase Queen-street frontage, bub will be prepared to lease such lots as may be desired in Princes-street at the upset price of £5 per annum." The motion was carried.

Dividing Fence.—Mr. Tapp moved, seconded by Mr. Bray, " That a stone wall be erected at the eastern end of the recreation reserve, tenders to be called for next meeting." The motion was carried. Notices of Motion.—The Mayor gave notice to move at next meeting that a halfmile of four-inch water-mains, together with valves and hydrants, be indented for through Messrs. T. and S. Morrin and Co.
