GREAT BARRIER STEAM SERVICE.
V v A mkktinc of the .settler.- was held at • Fitzroy on June -S, to ('.insider the present > means of communication with Auckland. ' There was a full attendance of settlers, Mr. >' T. Moor in the chair. They unanimously ( agreed to fully support a steamer. The s resolutions carried at the meeting are to be s forwarded to the (lovernment for their eon- , sideration. On July 15 another meeting of the settlers was held in the Tryphena Sehoolhouse, to discuss the steam services. All were present. .Mr. .John Blair, sen., occupied the r chair. The subject w.i.s well ventilated for "] an hour and a half. The Northern Company came in for their share of the blame for the | present state of uilairs. The (Government were severely criticised for their part in the allair. Mr. M itcheison admit ted to a depu- ' tat ion from the Harrier that hey were net/ j receiving enough subsidy, vet, withal, he still continues to oiler only £150 for a steam service. The meeting was brought to a close wit i the following resolutions being ~ passed : — 1. "That it, is lie opinion of this meeting that the (iovcriinient lias not acted , justly with us in causing our steam service to cease tor the want of a *uflicieut subsidy." 'J. "That the (Jovernment ought to grant a subsidy of .Clot) per year towards a ' steam service to tin; < ireat Barrier Island, ' on the grounds that no public money has been spent, on highways, bridges, wharves, etc., on this island." J. " That considering lie enormous sums of public money that, have been spent in the colony on trunk roads and railways and • other public works, Pom which we derive 1 no benefit, direct or indirect, and fur which ; we li.iv.i oo pay oar quota of the interest on the money borrowed to construct these '. works, the Government are fairly owing us a consideration in the way of suliiciont subsidy to .steamer." ' -1. "That as wo pay more than the sum ' of.£l-400 per year in taxes to the General (Government we are entitled to a sum of JL'.'i.V.) a year for a steam service." • r>. "That the Government be pressed "* to consider that for upwards of 'J.'i years no public money has been spent on the island f direct or indirect on public works, while 3 during the same period in all other parts -■ of the colony many millions of pounds of public money has been expended on public • works from which wo derive no benefit." 0.
