THE CASSELL REDUCTION PROCESS.

This process, which has been in operation at Karangahake for some time, seems likely to be taken up in America, where hitherto the best processes have been in operation. Mr. Thomas Melville, who introduced the process here, and who recently went to Glasgow, writes to us as follows ; —

Glasgow, June 14, 1890: —Sir, —As I know you take a warm interest in all that concerns the welfare of our goldfields, 1 have the pleasure to inform you that the Gassed Company, for whom 1 act as New Zealand agent, have succeeded in scoring a big success in America. A company has been formed at Denver, the capital of Colorado, for the purpose ol working the process in America. The capital of this company is o,000,(XX) dollars, or £1.000,(XX) sterling, and of this amount the parent company receive 2,000,000 dollars, or J/400,000, for their patent rights. Some of the leading mining men of Colorado have gone into the venture after having made exhaustive trials on bulk lots of ore of various qualities. Amongst other ore so treated is one sample containing 13oz silver per ton hut no gold. After paying all mining costs and the cost of treatment, a profit of 3 dollars per ton or 12; ■sterling remains. The quantity of ore of this class in Colorado is practical I unlimited, and a plant has been erected at one mine capable of treating 100 tons per day. This ought once anil forever to set at. rest the ability of the process to treat silver ores pure and simple. The re-agent (cyanide of potassium) is made and sold in Denver in large quantities at '2.1 cents or Is per pound. There is no reason why it cannot be manufactured in Auckland at an equally low cost as all the essentials requisite for its production are a waste product with us. 1 cannot therefore help thinking that there is a vast future before this process in our colony, and 1 trust before returning to Auckland to make such arrangements as will greatly assist in furthering this end.

Mr. Melville visited Puhipuhi before he left New Zealand, and believed that it would be a good mining lield when tho proper process for reduction of the ore was put in motion. It will be seen by Mr. Melville's letter that one sample of ore treated at Colorado contained 1 (to - /. of silver and no gold, and that aft paying all mining costs and costs of treatment, a profit remained of three dollars per ton, or 12s. The run of the stone at Puhipuhi may be reckoned on for a much larger return than L'ioz to tho ton. The claitnholders at Puhipuhi should take action at once.
