SUNDAY TRADING.

[BY TELEGRAPH. —OWN CORRESPONDENT.] Tnam f.s, Thursday. At tho Police Court, to-day, Harold Hickton, licensee of the Duke of Edinburgh Hotel, was convicted for selling liquor on Sunday last, and fined £5, with costs 18s. In commenting upon tho evidence given by the defendant, tho Resident Magistrate made some strong remarks, and said it was lamentable to notice the utter disregard for an oath that was shown in Court now-a-days, as people camo there and deliberately perjured themselves. He added that the first opportunity he could get to bring these kind of men up for perjury lie would do so, and would thus do his best to make them always tell the truth. It was indeed regrettable that for tho sake of a paltry fine and endorsement of licences men would do and say anything. A case of allowing Yankee grab to be played in his hotel was also preferred against, the same defendant, but was adjourned until tho 17th inst., as the principal witness could not be found. Michael Fallon, licensee of the Imperial Hotel, was charged with allowing liquor to be consumed on his premises on Sunday last. It was admitted by the defence that liquor had been consumed by four persons, but Mr." Miller, counsel for the defendant, submitted that the defendant had not made a sale of liquor. Mr. Miller then explained at some length what he considered was the meaning of section .155 of the Licensing Act, and contended it was not Sunday trading to give a man a drink, as a person could do this if the thought proper, no matter in what quantity, or on what day. Judgment was reserved on this point until 17th inst.
