BOARD OF EDUCATION.

The usual meeting of the Board of Educa- , tion took place yesterday afternoon. Present: Messrs. R. Udy (chairman), J. M. Lennox, S. Luke, J. H. Upton, J. \V. Carr, Theo. Cooper. Chairman's Report.—The following is the Chairman's report:—Newmarket and Onehunga : Midwinter holidays postponed until after standard examination of school. Teachers: Resignations received — Miss E A. Swain, assistant, Onehunga ; Miss 11. Harden, junior assistant, Waiokaraka. Leave of absence was granted to eight teachers for illness. Balances. —The balances this day are Education fund, credit, £4930 4s 6d ; building fund, credit, £1223 las Cd : total, i £6160. Girls' High School, debit, £192 7s 4d. Elections.—Kaitaia : The committee to whom the protest received had been referred, declared that it was a forgery. The Board decided to take no further action. Lake : Mr. Sliakcspear wrote to say that he did not prevent or exclude a Chinaman from voting at the election ; that the Chinaman left without pressing his claim, consequently the question was never put to the meeting or decided by the chairman. Baglan : Messrs. Pegley, Triswell, and Redwell were appointed commissioners. Establishment of Schools (Okaihau). —■ The committee declined to recommend the application, therefore the Board took no action. Application refused. Paparoa Homestead : Board decided that this school should for the present bo half-time, with Mareretu, as a temporary arrangement. Tauhoa: The committee suggested two new sites for the school to be removed to. The Board decided to call the committee's attention to certain protests against the removal of the school. Way by and Wellsford : Agreed that the schools be taught half-time tor the [.resent as a temporary arrangement. Buildings.—Tenders to be invited for repairs and improvements at the following schools : —Coromandel, Driving Creek, and Wairoa South ; also for the erection of a shed at Marsh Meadows, Hamilton, towards which the residents had subscribed £20 odd. The enlargement of the Kavvakawa and Richmond schools was ordered to j be postponed : also a request for verandahs for Beresford street school. Request for ; classroom at Kaueranga boys' school again declined. Time penalties on contracts at Motukaraka, Okaihau, and Waimamakau schools remitted. Grants were made for the following places for repairs and other objects :—Wellosley-street East, Churchill, Ellerslie, Epsom, Ivaihu, Newmarket, Point Chevalier, Tamaki West, Tapu, To Rote, Waiotahi. The remaining eases were deferred. Miscellaneous. — Hamilton East: Forwarding suggestions for alterations of the school syllabus. Referred to tho inspector. Kauaeranga : Some 26 girls were absent from the examinations through la grippe. The committee suggested a second examination. The Re;.id considered suggestion impracticable, but stated that the teacher had power to classify the pupils. Tairua ; Complaint from Mr. East-gate regarding: monitors in the school. Referred to the -teacher. Adjustment of Salaries. — The quarterly adjustment of salaries was made There were a few increases, but most of the applications were rejected.
