THE KAIHU RAILWAY.
Messrs. llalks (District Engineer) and Vickcrman (C.E.), Government Railway Engineer, have taken over, on behalf of the Crown, the Kaihu Valley Railway and plant. The lino will be worked as usual by the present manager, Mr. T, 11. Barstow, and Lis stall', who now become Government employes. The earnings of the lino have, during the past nine months, paid for all working expenses, coal, maintenance, etc., and left a surplus of between £300 and £400, and this without its having as yet hauled any timber out, and without any of the company's endowments or other fine lands at the head of the lino being sold or settled. When these operations, for which the line was originally designed and built, are begun, the Kaihu Railway, it is expected, will be the best paying in the colony. The adverse report which, it is understood, the Commissioners have made, has caused much surprise here amongst those who know all the circumstances.
