TRADE AND COMMERCE OF FIJI.
A REPORT on the trade and commerce and shipping of the colony of Fiji for the year 1889, just published by the Receiver-Gene-ral, states :—The total trade, imports and exports, although £6525 less than in 1888, exceeds that of ISS7 by £84,523, and that of 1886 by £39,550. This is still due to !he excess of exports over imports, increasing year by year, and which probably represents debt owing by the colony. The huge imports of machinery in former years must be remembered. Taking the total trade of 1889 as 100, the percentage comparison is as follows 1889, £553,675, 100 1888, £500,200, 101-17; 1887, £409,152, 84-73; 1880, £514,125, 92-85. The total imports of" 1889 are £11,230 less than in 1880, but £1322 more than 1887, and £0171 more than in 1888. The total exports, on the other hand, although £12,090 less than in 1888, exceed those of 1887 by £83,202, and those of 1880 by £80,780.
