DISORDERLY MEETING IN SYDNEY. Sydney, June 14. A most disorderly meeting took place last night over the compensation question. It was called in the first instance by the Sydney licensed victuallers for the purpose of protesting against the nonpayment of compensation to publicans, but the local optionists turned up in force, took possession of the meeting, and passed an amendment in favour of local option with no compensation. Matters became so serious at one time that the police had to form a cordon to separate the two parties. SOUTH AUSTRALIA AND NEW ZEALAND. Adelaide, June 14. An influential deputation waited on the Colonial Treasurer to urge the negotiation of a reciprocal Customs treaty with New Zealand with regard to wine and oats. It was suggested that the wine duty in New Zealand should be reduced from 5s to 2s 6d per gallon, and New Zealand oats admitted into South Australia free. The Treasurer said a Bill was being prepared to that effect. PETROLEUMAND COAL. Melbourne, June 15. A wealthy syndicate is being formed to test the petroleum and coal deposits on Yorke Peninsula. INTERCOLONIAL BOAT-RACE. Melbourne, June 15. A Sydney crew won the intercolonial eight-oared race by three lengths. SHIPPING. Sydney, June 15. Arrived : S.s. Monowai, from Auckland. _____________
