Considerable surprise was mani/ested by shipping men yesterday when they observed alongside cue wharf the old brigantine Clansman. which was so severely damaged over a year ago in a gale at Gisborne. After being towed here, she was purchased by Messrs.'. G. Niccol and Son, and during the past six months she has been on their slip at the North Shore, and has been almost entirely rebuilt, having had a new keel, about 400 new timbers, planking, and ribs put in. She is now as good as new, and presents a handsome appearance. Her masts have been stepped, ana a number of workmen were yesterday busily engaged uj>on her rigging, ■which will be in altered style from of old, aft she is in future to sail *3 a topsail schooner. Messrs. Niccol have gone to great trouble and expense in her refitting, and it is hoped the vessel will prosper in her new trade. She goes, as soon as ready for sea, to Noumea and Long Island, and thence to Dunedin. As it was found impossible to get the brosen crank shaft repaired here, Messrs. Donald and Edenlx>rough have forwarded it to Wellington, so that it will be some considerable time before the steamer is put in ► going order again. Last evening, at 5 o'clock, the Union S.S. Co.'s tine steamer Mararoa sailed with a good number of passengers and a quantity of mixed freight, including four racehorses, for Sydney. The barque Wild Wave, now putting out her cargo at Queen-street Wharf, will, on completion, take in a freight of sawn timber here for Hobart. It has been decided that the barque An drea Wilhelmina, now tilling up with Bawu and baulk kauri at Hobson-street Wharf, shall take her cargo, not to the French port of Havre, as fir st purposed, but either to London, Hull, or some other British port. At an early hour yesterday morning the S.S. Manapouri, Captain T. arrived from Sydney with passengers and cargo. The purser reports that she left Sydney on May 29th, at 5.30 p.m., and experienced strong winds from the south with a beam sea on the trip across. She rounded the North Cape at noon on the 2nd, and had fine weather till irrival. The schooner Welcome has completed the discharging of her cargo of Queensland coal, and will now load up with timber at Tairua, for Adelaide. H.M.s. Opal, en route from Sydney to Portsmouth, called at Albany and reproted all well on May 24th. The well-known brigantine Parnell,so long Bailing under Messrs. Stone Brothers' flag, has been purchased by Mr. Alex. Burns, of Sydney, and her port of register has been changed to that place. During yesterday the s.s. Australia shipped a large quantity of general cargo, and sailed at 6 p.m. for her return trip to East Coast ports and Wellington. The ship Waimate, now discharging, has teen fixed to load here for London An Admiralty order has been received at Sheernesis Dockyard directing the authorities to commence the construction of a new second-class cruiser, which is to be named the Brilliant, and will be the largest ship ever built at that establishment. She is to be 300 feet in length, and is to have & displacement of 3600 tons. Messrs. Russell and Co. launched from their Kingston yard, at Port Glasgow, on v April 13, a four-masted steel barque, of 2200 tons net register to carry 3600 tons on Liloyu s freeboard. The new ve.ssel. which was named Garnet Hill, is of the following dimensions ..-Length, '278 feet; breadth, 42 feet; depth, 24 feet 3 inches. She has been built to the order of Messrs. J. R.
