DUNEDIN JOCKEY CLUB'S MEETING.

Donedin, Saturday. The Dunedin Jockey Club's Birthday Meeting was commenced day. The weather was cold and stormy. The racing was very good, all the finishes being close and exciting, and though the favourites won, there was no " one horse" race. There was a very hot finish in the Tradesman's Handicap between the two first horses, Ruby and Lord Acton, and the riding of Wisby and Derritt was superb. As the horses came to the post locked together, first Lord Aston and then Ruby appeared to have the advantage, but the manner in which he drove Ruby along was one of the finest exhibitions of horsemanship that has been _ seen at Forbury ; Wisby's display being little, if any, behind. The following are the results : — Hurdle Handicap of lOOsovs, second ISsovs. About two miles. Mr. Rutherford's b h Ahua, 12st 91b (Lunn) 1 Mr. Wright's b h Trimolite, lOst (G. Ahua came away from the field with ease and won by a length. Time, 4m. 14s. Dividends, £1 17s 6d and £1 16s 6d. Waitangi fell, but Poole waa not injured by his fall. Maiden Plate of 6050v3. A quarter of a mile from home Preston, who had led up to this point, was done with, and Invermay momentarily ihowed in front, but Belvidere soon settled him, and Goodman's horse led into the straight. Danville here put in his claim, but Belvidere was going very strong, and won rather easily by a length, Dunville a good third. Time." 2m 20£s. Dividends: £2 lis inside, and £2 8? outside.

When the flag at last fell all got on level terms excepting Catamount. After a quarter of a mile Miss George was the first ahead of Blizzard, and as they passed the stand Miss George, Blizzard, and Mon Loup were racing together, the other pair close up. Going past the windmills. Blizzard and Mon Loup were racing together, the other pair close up, but a little further on Blizzard's nose was .in front, the field closely following. As they went on Miss George, however, got in front. Mon Loup was done with in the quarter of a mile, and as they turned into the straight, Wolverine made a splendid rush, and challenging Blizzard, these two drew right away, and fought out a great finish, which resulted in Blizzard lasting long enough to get home by a length, Mon Loup eight or teu lengths away. Time, 2rn 445. Dividends: Inside, £1 16s ; outside, £1 12s.

The quartette were well together. When 200 yards had been covered Emmason was still in the leading position, which position lie maintained till well in the straight, when Watercress challenged him, and gradually wore him down. At a quarter of a mile Forester was still a length in front, but a little further on he was joined by Lord Ashton, and Little Shamrock commenced to make a forward move, getting into third position as they rounded the bend into the • straight, where all the horses closed up. When they had turned fairly into the straight Ruby joined the leaders, and the pace proved too much for Forester, who dropped back. Ruby and Lord Ashton drew clear of the others, and a most exciting race up the straight followed, Derritt, and Wisby driving their mounts along in splendid style. Derritt, on Ruby, lasted the longest, and won by a little more than halfa length, Little Shamrock only a fair third. Time, lm 48£b. Dividends, £4 and £5 19s §d, (The starter resorted fetors to the

TAKAPUNA RACES. [BY PHAETON.] With every prospect of beautiful weather, the Takapuna Jockey Club's Meeting to-day should furnish one of the most enjoyable afternoon's sport that lias been brought off at that popular place of resort. The programme to be gone through is a varied one of seven events, the acceptances and entries for which are in every way most satisfactory, and the open character of all the races surrounds the contests with the greatest amount of interest. The first race is set down on the programme to be started sharp at twelve noon, aud as the Ferry Company will bring the whole of their fine fleet of steamers into commission for the occasion, visitors may anticipate speedy and comfortable travelling to Devonport. 1 may remark that as usual the Club and Ferry Company have arranged to issue a through ticket (including admission to the course) at one shilling. The following are the acceptances for the principal events :—

Maiden* Plate, one mile.—Pinflre, Sst 101b; Ingorinii,,Bst; Fishmonger, Bst; Locket, 7st 121b; Octopus, Tst 121b ; Fragrance, 7st (Jib ; Torment, ?st Clb ; Shamrock, 7st Clb; l.eofric, 7st 4lb ; Lottery, 7st'.lb ; Phantom, Cst 71b ; Xe Kootl, 6st 71b; Antic, Out ; Myra, 6st; Albeit, Cat. Hurdle Race, one railo and three quarters.— Oilando. lOst 41b; Parnell, 9st 101b; Hune, 9*t lGlb ; Fishmonger, 9st 71b ; Dick Turpin, 9it 71b ; Hailstone, 9st ; Operatic, 9st ; Shamrock, 9st ; Billy, 9st; Irish Agitator, 9-it ; Larrikin No. 2, 9st. Birthday Handicap, one mile and a quarter.— Leorina, Bst 121b ; Loch Ness, fist 4lb ; Tamora, Bst; Pinflre, 7xt l'Jlb ; Holosa, 7st 91b ; Fiesole, 7st bib ; Montrose, 7st 4lb ; Cartridge, 7st 2lb ; Riot, 7*t 2lb ; Nigger, 7st 2lb; Torment, Cst 101b ; To Kooti, Cst IMb ; Dollar, Cst 101b ; Phantom, Cst, Steeplechase, about three miles and a quarter. —Magnesia, lOst 12lb ; Orlando, lost 4lb ; Tawhiao, lost ; Parnell, 9st 101b ; Hune, Stat 101b ; Dick Turpin, Ost loll), Fishmonger, 9st 10lb; Shamrock, 9st 71b ; Billy, Sst 71b ; Irish Agitator, »st Tib ; Surprise, 6st 711). Victoria Handicap, six and a half furlongs.— Leorina, Sst 121b; Loch Ness, Sit 81b; Fiesole, Sst 21b; Tamora, 7xt 121b; Pinfire, 7st 101b; Dolosa, Tst 101b ; Rataplan, Tst Clb ; Dollar, 7st Clb ; Fusee, 7»t 01b; Ingorina, 7st 4lb; Fishmonger, 7sc 21b; Nigger, 7"t; Operatic, 7st ; Cartridge, Tst; Riot, 7st ; Prudence, 7st ; Lottery, 7st ; Octopus, Cst 101b ; Torment, 04 101b; Premier, (Ist; Phantom, Cst ; Te Kooti, Cst ; Albert, (Ist.

The Maiden Plate is rather difficult to deal with, owing to several of the horses having other engagements. If Fishmonger and Pintire start, either should supply the winner. Parnell and Orlando read to me the most dangerous for the Hurdle Race, and I shall place |hem in that order. The Birthday Handicap will, 1 think, be fought out between Leorina and Loch Ness, and I prefer their chances as written. The Steeplechase is very open, but whatever beats Orlando should, 1 think, win. The Victoria Handicap is to a certain extent dependent on the running in the Birthday Handicap, but Fiesole, Loch Ness, and Dolosa, will, 1 think, supply the placed division.
