London, May 22. Tiik Australians began their match against Surrey at eleven o'clock at the Oval to day. The weather was fine and there was a large attendance of the public. The wicket was in perfect- condition. The home team went to the wicket first, and had run up a score of 200 before they were all disposed of. Sh uter made 10, Abel 25, Maurice Reed 40. W. W. Read played a brilliant innings of 87 for Surrey. Turner only took two wickets at the cost of 49 runs, Ferris four for a similar number, and Lyons three for 34. The fielding of the Australian! team was splendid, especially that of Trott at point. ■H6 was repeatedly chcered by the spectators for his dashing work in that position. When play ceased for the day the Australians had lost four wickets for 106— Barrett 37, Murdoch 40, Trott nob out 23. London, May 23. In the match with Surrey, the Australians, at the fall of the fifth wicket, had made ISO runs.
