THE POPULATION OF THE COLONY.

[BY TELKOKAPH. —PRESS ASSOCIATION.] Wellington, Thursday. The estimated population of the colony on December 3lst last, exclusive of Maoris, was 620,279 ; on the same date in 1583 it was estimated at 607,380, and tho Regis-trar-General puts the increase during the year at 12,899. This is made up of the excess of births ovor deaths, 12,085 ; the excess of arrivals over departures, 214. The Maori population, according to the census of 1836, than which no more recent information is available, was 41,969, giving the total population of New Zealand as 662,248. Of these 354,611 are males, and 307,037 females. During the year there were 15,392 arrivals and 15,178 departures ; 5047 persons came from New South Wales, and 7043 went there; 3275 came from the United Kingdom, and 2039 left for there ; from Victoria the arrivals wero 5532, and departures 4748. December, of course, shows the greatest number of arrivals, 2655, which was a thousand more than in November, though November headed all the other months. March and April were the favourite months for leaving tho colony, just over 1700 each. November was the only month in which the departures fell below 1000.
