N.Z. STUD AND PEDIGREE STOCK COMPANY'S SALE.

The annual sale of the New Zealand Stud and Pedigree Stock Company was held on January 3 at Sylvia Park, and it was rendered of more than ordinary interest from the fact that the company had determined to dispose of the whole of their Clydesdales, and a number of brood mares. There was a very large attendance, and the prices realised were eminently satisfactory. The sale was conducted by Mr. James Philson. who acted for the firms of Hunter and Nolan and A. Buckland and Sons. The weather was at first somewhat threatening, but it took up fine in che afternoon. # The sale of Clydesdales took place in the forenoon in the lower stables, and there was a large attendance of buyers and keen competition for many of the lots. Amongst the principal buyers were Messrs. Duncan, Stead, Boag, Phillipps and Sons, Paul (of Wauganui), Winchester, Storey. Mr. Stead and Mr. Duncan competed very closely for the seven-year-old mare Pair Nell, which realised £98, the highest priced one of the lot. For other lots there was also fair competition. After lunch there was a very large crush at the annual sale of yearlings. Amongst the principal buyers were the Messrs. Wilson (of Broken Hills), Mr. G. G. Stead (of Canterbury). Mr. Gollan (of Napier), Mr. J. D. Ormond), Mr. D. 0 Brien. There was some splendid competition for the Nordenfeldt stock, and for the half-sister to Carbine, the Nordenfeldt—Mersey lilly, there was an exciting contest. Mr. D. O'Brien had evidently made up his mind to become the owner of the handsome chestnut filly but Mr. W. R. Wilson had also set his mind on her, and the bidding starting at 200 guineas, rapidly ran up in 100 and 50-Ruinea bids to 500 guineas, and thence in 25-?uinea bids to 650 guineas, where Mr. O'Brien stopped, and the filly became the property of Mr. W. R. Wilson, at 675 guineas, who was loudly cheered on his purchase Mr. O'Brien was more fortunate, we hope/in his next venture, for he bought a very handsome bay colt by Nordenfeldt— Crinoline for 450 guineas. But the pick of the bunch, the flower of the flock, was the Nordenfeldt— Nelly Moore colt, half-brother

to Corunna and Lochiel. He is a beautiful, shapely colt, and was warmly greeted on entering the ring, and it was at once seen that competition was to bo keen 'and sharp. Mr. Stead started the ball rolling with a sporting bid of 400 guineas, and Messrs. Gollan and Wilsons and O'Brien at once entered into competition. The second bid was 500 guineas, and in 25 guinea bids the price ran up to 900 guineas in quick time, and from thence it went more slowly up to 1000 guineas, the four-figure bid being the signal for renewed applause. Mr. W. R. Wilson came with a bid of 25 guineas, and secured the colt for his Australian home, and was loudly applauded on his plucky purchase. Mr. Gollan did not forgot the victories of Tirailleur, and secured his sister after a keen competition between Mr. Stead and himself for 525 guineas, and he also purchased the Nordenfcldt— Idea filly for 210 guineas. Maxim's sister fell to tho nod of Mr. W. R. Wilson at. 200 guineas. For the Pearl Ash filly by Nordenfeldt there was a close contest between Mr. Stead and Mr. Gollan, and the Canterbury sportsman secured the lot for 425 guineas. Some of the Sword Dance and Leolinus youngsters also fetched good prices. The total amount realised from the yearling sale of 43 lots was 6158 guineas, or an average slightly over Mil guineas. Tho average was very much reduced by a number of weedylooking ones being put in at the last, but on the whole the sale must be considered a most successful one.
