BOARD OF EDUCATIONS.

The Auckland Board of Education met yesterday. Present: Messrs. J. H. Upton (chairman.), J. W. Carr, J. M. Lennox, T. Cooper, S. Luke, R. Monk, R. Udy, W. P. Moat.

Chairman's Retort. — The Chairman's usual report contained the following particulars :—Sohool buildings : Committees of the under-named schools have been communicated with in terms of inspectors' reports on state of school buildings: Corom&ndol, Driving Creek, Hastings, Hikutaia, Hobsonville, Parkhurst, Port Albert, Burin, Waiheke Island. Inspection: Districts have been allotted to inspectors for the current year as follows: Mr. Goodwin, Northern Division Mr, Airey, Southern; Mr. Dickenson, North Central; Mr. Crowe, South Central. Araparara : Memorialists have been informed that the inspector will visit the district and report on the application for a school. Epsom: The committee have been referred to the Act regarding the enforcement of the provisions for compulsory attendance. Grafton Road : The committee have boon informed, in reply to their inquiry, that the question of the establishment of a school at Eden Terrace is under consideration, and has not yet been decided upon. Heleusville : The committee havo been informed that effect will be given to their wishes for the rc-instatement of an assistant teacher on the expiration of her leave of absence. Lucas' Creek : Approved the extension of holidays as recommended by committee. Mangapai: The committee have been informed that the proposal for a change of teacher has been withdrawn. Maraotai: Mr. W. Cider has been referred to the provisions of the Act regulating the proceedings of committee, and the committee have been referred to the regulations as to the use of schoolroom for entertainments. Okaihau : The contractor for the new school building has been instructed to stay work pending the consideration of the question as to change of site. Puhoi: Teacher has been referred to the regulations as to the period and duration of the midsummer holidays. Russell: Application has beeu made to the Waste Lauds Board for the reservation of additional site as recommended by the committee. Waiheke Island : The committee have been informed that the Board has uot extended the holiday on account of the Jubilee. Waimamaku : Mr. A. Cerfield has been informed that it is not intended to appoint a local clerk of works to superintend the erection of the school building. : VVayby (Hotco Bridge): Mr. H. Wilson has been informed in answer to his protest that the Board has selected the site recommended by the Inspector as being the most suitable for a school. Appointments authorised : Mr. A. N. Scott, assistant master, Parnell school, as recommended by the committee ; Miss J. L. Spence, from laupiri to Turanga Creek; Miss A. G. Jerrain to Taupiri; Miss H. W. Thompson to return to Jleleusv-iLle, as recommouded by the committee : Miss J. H. EdmLstou, assistant, from HelensviHe to Aratapu ; Miss J. D. Grant, assistant, to remain at Makotu for the present; Mr. J. Giffney to Nguuguru ; Miss G. E. Boone, pupil teacher, from Newton West to VVaipu Upper; Miss M. E. Kissliug, pupil teacher, from Bores-ford-street te Kaukapakapa-; Miss V. A. Johnston, pupil teacher, from Gcaftou Road to Puui ; Miss E. M. Chapman, pupil teacher, from Uevouport, to the Lake. Resignations received : Miss Braithwaite, pupil teacher, Devouport; Miss J. McGlashau, teachor, Rangiriri ; Miss S. J. F. Mulgau, assistant, Te Aroha ; Mi". H. Poland, substitute assistant; Miss K. Vialoux. assistant, Newmarket ; Mr. L. C. Marshall, teacher, Hastings school; Miss M. Kilfoylo, teacher, Maugawai Beach aided school. The Chairman explained that though a tender had been accepted for the building of a school at Okaihau, the work had beeu suspended pending the settlement of a question as to whether the school should be placed upon the old or the new sites. As to the teacher's house at New Lynn, it had since been thought that a six-roomed building would be too luge, but the house was uot about a quarter built. He and Mr. Goldio had accepted the tender. Mr. Carr objected to the erection of so large a house in a district like New Lynn. The house was really an eightroomed house, and was built on an expensive scale. The Chairman said the cost was £350. The report was adopted; and in regard to the Okaihau school site Mr. Carr and one of the inspectors were deputed to visit the district and report. Auditor. — Mr. Frasor was appointed auditor of school lund accounts, in place of Mr. Durrieu, resigned. Income and Expenditure.— The secretary submitted a return showing the estimated income for the ensuing year to bo £73,210 lis, and the expenditure i77,10S lis. Mr. Moss' History.—A letter was read from Sir George Grey, approving of Mr. Moss' " School History of New Zealand" for school use. Sir \V. Fox wrote a letter which was not unreservedly favourable, and Dr. Campbell generally approved of the work. It was resolved "That an application be made _to the Minister of Education for the permissive use of the book in the schools."

Schools and School Accommodation*. — The consideration of the question of closing tho Ararimu School was deferred. The Board decided to ask whether a building would be provided, and also for Information us to the number of the children in the district. Komi and Kirikiri : Mr. Goodwin recommended the Board to take over tho native school, and open it as a public school. It was agreed to adopt the suggestion. Nethorton (Upper Thames): The Hoard resolved to assist in establishing an aided school. Puma (Whangarei) and Kawhia : Applications for the establishment of schools were referred to the inspectors. Taupaki : In reply to 1111 application for greater school facilities, the Board resolved to state that they did not see their way to alter the existing arrangements at present. Cabbage Bay : The consideration of a request for the erection of a school building was deferred, until further information had been received. Driving Creek : It'was resolved to take no action in respect of an application for the enlargement of the Driving Creek school. Drury: The consideration of a request for the enlargement of the school building was deferred. Lucas' Crock : An application for repairs in tins district was referred to Mr. Udy. Mangapai : Tiie householders asked that the old Courthouse bo used for school purposes. The Board offered no objection. Mangere Bridge : It was resolved to secure possession of the site before proceeding with the building of the sehoolhouse. Auckland City: The planing of 200 desks in the Beresfordstreet School was authorised. Kaitaia : Certain repairs needed at the Awauui School were authorised. Maungaturoto :It was resolved to obtain an estimate of the cost of repairs to the roof of the school. Bai Kauri: The sum of £2 I.os was granted for repairs. Waiotahi and Waiokaiaka : Repairs, etc., to the school furniture were authorised.

Teachers' Hodsks.—Ellorslie : An application for additions to the teachers' house was referred to Mr. Allright. Oliinowai: An application was received that a teacher's house be built. It was decided to ask' for further information. Otahuhu : It was resolved to build a new house for the teacher in this district. To Kopuru : Tlio Board agreed to order plans for a four-roomed house at To Kopuru. Paparoa and Patumahoe: Applications for repairs to the teachers' houses were referred to Mr. Allright. Miscellaneous. —Pairburn's Road : 'Die sum of £2 was granted for clearing the school site. Kaco: The expenditure of £2 was authorised in the removal of a partition in the school., Kamo : It was decided to charge against the school fund half the cost of painting. Kaukapakapa : A sum of £5 was granted for improvements to the school ground. Port Albert: An application for a grant for fencing was acceded to. Wade : An amount or £1 was granted for general repairs. The Teaching Staff.— following matters in regard to teachers were dealt with :—Morrinsvillo : The salary of the teacher to be reduced to £100 in consequence of a falling-oif in the number of the pupils. Takahue : The teacher to be removed, his salary to remain at £80. Kaukapakapa, Maketu, and Upper Waipu: The services of sewing teachers to be dispensed with in consequence of the appointment' of pupil teachers. Matakaua: The head teacher and pupil teacher to receive notice of the termination of their engagements with the Board. Appointments were made as follow :—West Mauku.Mr.Hosking; Rangiriri.Miss Henry: Hastings, Mr. Mason; Te Moan, Mr. R. Campbell; Kikutaia, Mr. Hammond; Newmarket, Mr. Semadeni; Panmure, Mr. Walker; Te Aroha, Miss Mill Newton East, Miss Oruiistou; Beresford-street, Misses Murray, Evans and Sturtevant; Wellesleystreet, Miss Cranch. Waiokaraka: Mr. Fidlcr, formerly inspector, was appointed substitute teacher at this school, at a salary of £175 a year. A number of other minor appointments were also made. Jubilee Holidays.— consequence of the fact that next Friday will be a holiday, the Board adjourned for a fortnight, having also resolved that the offices should be closed on Wednesday, and on the afternoons of Thursday, Friday and Saturday.
