THAMES NEWS.

[fbom our own cohrespoxdent.] Thames, Tuesday. The man James Keating, who was brought down from Pueroa one day last week on suspicion of being a lunatic, and who was then remanded to the Thames Hospital for medical treatment, was again brought up at the Police Court this morning, before Mr. Northcrofb, R.M., and, on the testimony of Drs. Williams and Callan, was committed to the Avondale Asylum. Tho unfortunate man was taken to Auckland this afternoon by Constable Christie. The quarterly sitting of the Thames Central Licensing Committee v/as held at noon to-day, when a transfer of license was granted from William Rylance to John Hand for the Pacific Hotel. Permission was also granted to Catherine Lindsay to carry on the Queen's Hotel until letters of administration had been obtained in her deceased husband's estate. The Thames South Licensing Committee was to have meb to sanction the transfer of the license for tho Thames Hotel from James Thompson to William Drew, but as there was not a quorum this matter was adjourned until fco-morrow. Owing to the postponement of the Caledonian G.M. Co. s appeal case in the Supreme Court from Wednesday to Friday, Mr. George Wilson, Mining Inspector, who is under instructions to report upon the silver lodes in the Puhipuhi forest, will be unable to leave for that district as early as he had intended, in consequence of his being subpoenaed as a witness for the defence in the above action. Mr. Wilson, however, left here to-day for Paeroa, on departmental business, and from thence will proceed to Te Aroha, where he will leave -by Tuesday's train for Auckland. Art effort will probably be made to take his evidence on Friday, in order to permit him to leave for Whangarei by tho s.s. Wellington on Friday evening.

The committee of the Auckland Cricket Association met at their club-rooms, Imperial Hotel, the other evening, to consider the proposal received by cable of a visit of a New South Wales eleven. The secretary was instructed to reply that the Association would be pleased to see the visitors, and to arrange matches, giving them two-thirds of the nett proceeds. A cablegram was yesterday sent to that effect to Sydney. It is rather unfortunate that our representative team will be away South on the dates on which the Cornstalks propose being here, but strong efforts will be made to place a good eleven in the field. The liberality of the local Association in regard to terms to visitors is more apparent thaa that of our Dunedin friends, who, on being solicited, replied that they never contribute towards the visits of Interprovincial teams. As Dunedin has been already visited three times by Auckland during the last 17 years, and has never yet known the expense of an Island tour, they might on this occasion haye been generous. Good practice 1 is being gone in for by Auckland players on the Domain, and the rain has made the ground much more playable. ,:. A perfect little home, with beautiful flower garden, and;,orchard, of apples, figs, plums, &c, can be secured this week for £40 cash and balance on mortgage at six ner confe,, ab Thornes. 81. Queen-street.
