THE ASHWORTH CASE.
[iJY TKJ.KQKAPH. —PRKSS ASSOCIATION.] Wellington, Wednesday. With reference to the Wauganui telegram on the Ash worth caso, Mr. Jellicoe states it is not correct to say he refused to attend. At tho last moment on Monday ho received a telegram from tho prosecutor saying he had no means to employ Mr. Jellicoe, and if the latter acted for him it must be at the Government expense. To this Mr. Jellicoe replied "If you do not get a satisfactory reply from the Justice Department, go before the Judge when ho takes his seat in the morning, and explain the course the Crown Prosecutor took when you consulted him, and read a copy of your letter to tho Minister of Justice, and ask what you are to do." To this he never received any answer.
