' RESULT OF THE ST. LEGER. Press Association.—Electric Telegraph.—Copyright. London, September 11. The Doncaster Meeting was continued today. The following result for The St. Leger Stakes of 25 sovs each, for then three-year; col ts, tet; fillies, Bst lllbs. The owner of the second horee to receive 200sovs, and the third lOOsovs out of the stakes. Old St. Leger Course about one mile and six furlongs and 132 yards. (205 subs.) Duke of Portland's b c Donovan, by Galopin—Mowerina 1 Mr. J. Grettou's bk c Miguel, by Fernandez—Cream Cheese .. 2 Lord Bradford's br c Davenport, by Chippendale— ... ... 3 Donovan was bred by the Duke of Portland, in whose colours he first ran in the Brocklesby Stakes, at Lincioln. This he won from Poem, and nine others, and he followed this up with an easy victory in the valuable Portland Stakes, at the Leicester Spring Meeting, in which he beat a field of 25. At Manchester, in the Whitsuntide Plate, Chitabob, on receipt of 131b, very easily turned the tables on Donovan, who, however, won his next five races. These were the New Stakes at Ascot, Homebred Foal Stakes at the Bibury Club Meeting, Hurstbourne Stakes at the Stockbridge Meeting proper, July Stakes at Newmarket, and Ham Stakes at Goodwood. After winning the last-named race on the opening day, he was pulled out on the Thursday for the Prince of Wales' Stakes, but finished a bad third to El Dorado and Gold. He next scored a brace of victories at, the Newmarket First October Meeting—in" the Buckingham Stakes and Hopeful Stakes; and at the Second October Meeting, in the Middle Park Plate, cantered away from Gulliver, Clover (French colt), Enthusiast, Swift, Saint Serge, Miguel, Evergreen, Gav Hampton, Australia, Gold, Ben Strome, Miuthe, and the colt by Hermit out of Ma Belle. In the Dewhurst Plate he wound up a successful two-year-old season by defeating Enthusiast, Australia, and others, the success being achieved by half-a-length. This season he made his debut in the Prince of Wales's Stakes at Leicester, wherein he scored an easy victory over Pioneer, Minthe, Enthusiast, Gay Hampton, and others, whereby he credited his noble owner with the biggest stake ever run for, viz., £11,000. In the Two Thousand Guineas Donovan was unaccountably beaten by Enthusiast, though in all probability the former's victory was more attributable to Tom Cannon's horsemanship than to any actual merit of his own. For the Newmarket Stakes of 7500sovs, however, he showed up in quite different colours, and won comfortably from his stable mate The Turcophone, and a good field. He started a red-hot favourite for the Derby, which fell an easy prey to him, the field behind him being composed of Miguel, El Dorado, Enthusiast, and six others. At Ascot a month later Donovan was still in the winning vein, and he achieved an easy victory in the Prince of Wales Stakes. Prior to Donovan's victory in the St. Leger he had won in stakes the large sum of £39,762, and as the Doncaster event would probably be worth about £1000, his winnings in stakes will be raised to nearly £44, while in round numbers the Duke of Portland has secured in stakes over £83,00!} since the present season commenced. One of the leading Sydney scribes says " "To judge by Manton's present condition, racing men are not likely to see the aristocratic New Zealand at his best, even if he strips at all, at the spring meeting of the A..3.C.. and it is unlikely that he can be got quite ready for the V.R.C. carnival." Martini - Henry's four - year old sister, Forest Queen, is said to be a greatly, improved mare, and may at an early date be expected to show a big alteration in the form she has previously displayed. An effort lias been made to get the committee of the Victoria Racing Club to relax the conditions with regard to pony race meetings, but without success. In order to show some appreciation of the services rendered by him to the cause of horse-breeding in Prance, M. Lupin has had the honour of a chevalier conferred upon him. The programme for the Onehunga Racing Club's Spring Meeting will be found in another column. Nominations for the principal events of the Paluiranga Racing Club's Meeting are 1 due to-night. The stallion Trafalgar (by Maribyrnong— Telopca), is to be offered by auction to-day at the Hayinarket.
