BANKRUPTCY.
J. D. Hayes.—A meeting of the creditors of J. D. Hayes, bankrupt, was held yesterday at the offices of the Official Assignee. Mr. Lawson presided, and Messrs. Clendon, Stone, and Thome were present on behalf of several creditors. Mr. Humphreys appeared for Mrs. Hayes and others, whilst Mr. Beale represented the bankrupt and also a number of creditors. A proof of debt put in on behalf of Mrs. Hayes was objected to by Mi". Stone on the ground that ib was not shown that Mrs. Hayes had had any separate estate at the time the debt was contracted, and that she could not have had any such estate, since (he Married Women's Property Act was not then in existence. Mr. Cave, solicitor for the Official Assignee, ruled that this objection was good, and the proof was rejected. Mr. Clendon objected to Mr. Beale's acting at the same time on behalf of the bankrupt and several creditors. He argued that the Act did not allow a bankrupt to attend as proxy for creditors in his estate, and therefore the solicitor who represented the bankrupt must be bound by the same restriction. This objection was nob upheld. It. r.v»«i resolved, " That Mr. Mass Davis's offer oi £15 for the stock-in-trade and apportionute value for residue of the license be accepted.' Mr. Clendon moved, "That the Oflicial Assignee take the necessary steps under section 70 of the Act of 1883 to obtain leave of the Court to take possession of the furniture of the debtor, now in possession of the debtor's wife or anyone representing her or professing to derive title from her." This motion was seconded by Mr. Stone, and agreed to.
