SOIREE AT HOWICK.

Thk first anniversary soiree in connection with the Howick and Pakuranga Band of Hope was held in the new hall on August 22nd, when, notwithstanding the unfavourable weather, there was a crowded attendance. The hall was very tastefully decorated with a profusion of flowers and ferns. A number of young ladies, superintended by Mesdames Gilmour and Hickson, attended to the tables, and were busily employed. Fully 240 persons were present to partake of the good things provided. After tea a programme of speeches, songs, etc., was gone through very successfully. The "Health Papers" were prepared for competitive examination. Sir W. Fox and Mr. C. G. Hill, the appointed examiners, expressed their pleasure and satisfaction in reviewing the essays submitted, and announced the following awards :—First division, Miss Alice Hattaway, first prize ; Mr. M. K. Gilmour, first prize. Second division, Miss E. King, first prize; Mr. J. Gilmour, first prize. Third division, Miss Ethel, first prize. The prizes (consisting of books and a picture kindly given by Sir W. Fox, Rev. J. Macky, and Messrs. Hill and Gilmour) were presented to the successful competitors by Sir W. Fox, who accompanied each presentation with a few suitable remarks. Mr. J. Smith acted as conductor, and his pupils reflected great credit on his teaching. Votes of thanks to the speakers, the band, and Mr. Smith and the ladies, were proposed by Messrs. J. Bell, W. D. Hattaway, and T. White respectively, and the meeting was then closed in the usual manner.
