THE CITY COUNCIL AND ADMIRAL FAIRFAX.
At the regular meeting of the City Council last night the Mayor moved thatthofollowing letter be forwarded to Roar-Admiral Fairfax :— Sir,—We, the undersigned, Mayor, Councillors, and residents of Auckland, respectfully congratulate you on your appointment as Second Lord of the Admiralty, and hope the future may bring you other and higher honours. We sincerely thank you for the many visits you have paid to New Zealand, and Auckland in especial; and regret that your appointment, and consequent approaching return to England, will prevent us, as anticipated, from seing you in Auckland during the ensuing summer. We shall ever retain a grateful remembrance of the interest evinced by you and Mrs. Fairfax for Auckland and its institutions, and we thank you for the cordial support and active assistance rendered by you and Mrs. Fairfax to charities and to destitute persons. Trusting you and Mrs. Fairfax may have a safe and pleasant voyage to England, we beg to subscribe ourselvej, your sincere wellwiahers.
His Worship very briefly referred to the countenance which Admiral Fairfax had given to the port, and the interest which he had taken in the place. The motion was seconded by Mr. Atkin and carried unanimously.
