FATAL ACCIDENT.

L. Stevens, of Hikutaia, l rv i been in town during tho clay with a tenia of horsoa for a laud of produce for Mr. Stevens. He reached Puriri on his return journey about i pan., and after resting a few minutes proceoded towards Ilikutaia, After going oub half-a-milo, ib is surmised that'deceased's hat. must havo been blown off hit- bend, and that in endeavourn,V to Rob out of tho waggon be f e ll underneath tho wheels, which passed over the lower parts of his body and ruptured him. Abont an hour afterwards a Mrs. Brown came along and found tho injured man lying; across tho road, he being then alive but in great pain. Mrs. Brown ntor.o ran into Purtvi and informed Messrs. tfnrretfcand Wright of what had occurred, unci these gentlemen at onco hastened to deceased's Resistance. On reaching tho spot, deceased said to Mr. Garrett, ''Give me your hand, old man; I'm done," and endeavoured to say something more, but hi? strength would not permit. Mr. Wright at once ran back to Puriri for a vehicle, but before ho returned life was extinct. The body, however, was taken back to I'uriri, and on Constable Bern's arrival it was removed to tho Puriri Hotel to await the holding of an inquest. Deceased was a man o r : about4o years of ago, but whether a married or single man I havo not yet been able to ascertain. An inquest is to be held this afternoon. Later. An inquest was held at the Puriri Hotel this afternoon, before Mr. E. F. Tizard, coroner, touching tho death of Henry Wood, when, after hearing tho evidence. the jury returned a verdict that deceased was accidentally killed by a dray passing over his body.
