BICYCLING CHAMPIONSHIP. Sydney, September 1. AT the bicycle sports yesterday the Amateur Mile Bicycling Championship was won by Busst, of Victoria, in 3min 3fsec. THE WEATHER IN VICTORIA. Melbourne, August 31. Heavy floods have been experienced in many parts of the colony, and at Benalla the railway line was washed away. THE TASMANIAN CABLE. Melbourne, August 31. The Sherard Osborne is engaged repairing the duplicate cable to Tasmania which was injured through the recent ' storms. COLONIAL DEFENCE. Melbourne, August 31. An interchange of opinions on the subject of garrisons being placed on Thursday Island and at King George's Sound has resulted in an understanding that the work will be undertaken forthwith. The opinion of Major-General Edwards on the question has been requested. RAINS IN NEW SOUTH WALES. Sydney, August 31. Heavy rains have been experienced generally throughout the colony. THREE VESSELS WRECKED. Sydney, August 31. Three trading vessels named the Margravine, Fleur-de-Lys, and the H. L. Treir.ien have been wrecked at th, Marshall and Kingsmill Groups. SHIPPING. Melbourne, August 31* Arrived : S.s. Mararoa, from the Bluff; Frank Guy, from Auckland ; Devonport, from Hokianga. Sailed: Grasmere, for New Zealand ; Howard, for Kaipara.
