A HUSBAND CHARGED BY HIS WIFE.
Mr. Alexander Henry Matthews, described as a clerk out of employment, affords a striking illustration of the powers enjoyed by married women under modern laws. Ab Westminster Police Court a few days ago Mrs. Matthews charged her better half with stealing an eider clown cjuilt, the property of her landlord, Mr. .John Bowly, of Margaretta Terrace, Chelsea. Mr. Bowly was away in Paris, and in his .iHence Mrs. Matthews signed the sheet charging her husband with felon}'. From the evidence given it would seem that Mr. Matthews had already been locked up on two occasions for assaults and threats, and had only came out of prison about three weeks ago. According to the wife's account, tho husband depended upon her to keep him, and was in the constant habit of pawning the materials which were entrusted to hor by customers to be made up into dresses. In answer to Mr. D'Eyncourb, Mrs. Matthews said the matter was a serious one, as her husband pawned her customers' dresses for drink. Eventually the magistrate ordered defendant to appear again in a week's timo, butliberatedjhimon his own recognisances.
