BOARD OF EDUCATION.

The regular meeting of the Board was held yesterday. Present: Mr. J. H. Upton, chairman. Messrs. S. Lake, J. W. Carr, RUdy, J. M. Lennox, and Theo. Cooper. Balances.— 1 balances to date, as submitted, are —Education fond (credit), £701 18a lid ; building fond (credit), £1597 Is 9d : total, £2299 Os Bd. Girls' High School, 16a 2d. Chairman's Report.—The Chairman's report was submitted. It dealt with a number of minor applications, and transfers of teachers effected since the last meeting, and leave of absence granted. The report was adopted. Standard Examinations.—A letter was received from the president of the Educational Institute, re the conduct of standard examinations. On this subject Mr. Worthington, president of the Auckland branch of the Institute, wrote that the resolution discussed, passed, and forwarded to the Board of Education, was directed against the prevalent idea that standard examinations are infallible tests of proficiency of pupils in the schools. Assertions were made by members that pupils passing from one school to another are not infrequently found to be deficient in that knowledge which their pass cards presume them to have acquired. Correspondence from Mr. Stewart, late president of the Institute, read, and the present president sent the reply. The letter was received. Scholarship Examination. —Mr. R. Keesing wrote against Saturday beingope of the examination days, as it interfered with scholars of the Jewish faith. It appeared that Saturday was one of the days fixed for the examination. It was agreed to ask the inspectors to advise. Awitc.—-The engineer, Mr. Allright, reported on the school braiding, and the repairs required. It was agreed that £3 be expended. Hotko Bridge.—This application for 10 acres, as a school site, was referred to the Inspectors to report on. Koru, Thames.—An application for a school at Kopu, Thames, referred to the Parawai committee. Newmarket. —The committee complained of delay in forwarding resulteof the standard examinations. It was agreed that the information be sent as soon as it was available. Nkwton. —This committee applied to have given to them control of an old building. It was agreed to sell the building for removal. NGAHiXAPOcrRi.—An application for a school was deferred pending the inspector's report. Orurc.—in this case a female teacher had. been sent to the district, and she did not occupy the teacher's dwelling, and the committee asked leave to rent the building. The permission was granted, the rent to be paid to the Board.

Waidtahj.An application for a new fence was referred to the inspector to report on, and an application for a refund of cost of painting was refused. Wilotgahei.—A complaint was received that the committee had not funds for cleaning the school after paying the cost of painting, &c. It was agreed that the committee be informed that the teacher is held responsible for the school, and that he be recommended to get the children to do the cleaning required. Accounts.Current accounts were passed for payment, and after the reception of applications for employment, &c., the meeting adjourned.
